Anybody care to share some of the good, bad and ugly you may possess on this boat before I become an owner? It seems to be a perfect fit for a family cruising boat.

Just understand going in that everything about this new boat will cost twice as much as for your present boat. (that is either the bad or the ugly)

Good Old Boat did a write up on the boat several years ago. I would try to get a re-print. Basically it was favorable. There is one in this area - maybe I can get contact info for the owner.

Bigger is better, but costs rise by the cube of the WLL. Sometimes less really is better.

The degree to which this matters depends on your discretionary budget.

C'mon guys, he just asked about the boat, NOT the choice of buying one. Patrick's on our dock, and I was glad to help him "move in" when he first moved from Texas to San Francisco Bay. His Beneteau is up for sale. He wants a bigger boat to go cruising.

Good luck, Pat.

Stu, you may have noticed that it has been a quiet week in the forum. Not enough members to even get a good argument started.
I offered that the ugly of his new boat would be the maintanance cost but that is only a problem if his budget is limited. About the boat I know nothing and wouldn't be able to identify it on sight.

I came very close to buying a Whitby 40/42 myself. You can find amazing deals on boats in this economy.

I have to see if I have all the research I did about a year or so ago. There is a very large disparity in condition of these great boats. you might be signing up for a lot of upgrade and maintenance costs. Since you own a boat I'll assume you already understand just how much an older 42' boat can cost to bring up to good condition. Ports, hatches, electrical, mechanical, tankage, sail related, electronics, sail handling, etc. get a really good inspector that will take many hours to go over all the boats systems. It could save you a lot of grief and could help negotiate a much lower price.

Absolutely stunning looking boats and they are hugely popular with cruisers. I am really happy with a center cockpit and feel it has a lot of advantages. Being able to put chairs on the back deck is a nice way to break up time between the cockpit and back deck. The living space is smaller but having a large aft cabin you can stand up and move around in is a worthwhile trade off for me. The list goes on but need to run. I thought I would at least send the links. The condition of the boat would be absolutely key in my decision.
