Which would be better for bedding deck hardware: Life Seal sealant which is a polyurethane and silicone formula, or Life-Caulk sealant which is a polysulfide sealant? Or something else?

THANKS!

The method I use is to first prepare the hole, (check the WEST epoxy web site for doing this properly). I use 3M 4200. Semi-permanent, but can be removed down the road if you need to. The cabin tops and decks on our C-22's have a plywood core, :cussing: and you want to make sure this is sealed to prevent water from ever getting into the core. The boy's at WEST really show an excelent method to do this. Yes, it will take time, but your boat is worth it.

No, WEST Epoxy, no relation to West Marine,(but your West Marine sells a good supply of WEST,(Wood Epoxy Saturation Technique is what I believe it stands for), products. Here is a link, then click on #002-550 "Fiberglass Boat Repair & Maintenance" on the top portion of the page. This link is to a pretty comprehensive booklet on about any repaire of fiberglass boats. Section 7.2.1 talks about hardware installation.

In my opinion, they are tops in epoxy products, research and advice . I've used their products for all kinds of repairs and construction projects on my boats throughout the years, and around my houses. For example, I repaired a cracked and leaking toilet water tank with WEST epoxy products. It was still holding strong and water tight when I sold the home 12 years after I made the repair! Good stuff, get to know it!

While I believe butyl tape is the best for this application polysulfide is FAR better than ANYTHING containing silicone.

Silicone contamination is just about as permanent as you can get on gelcoat and on the next re-bedding nothing will stick to it.

Here's how I bed deck hardware:

Capt Don 01- When you say "first I prepare the hole," do you mean that you clean out the plywood core from between the glass layers using a bent nail or allen wrench in a drill and replace it with an epoxy slurry (as described in the West link you supplied)? That looked like a great permanent fix to the rotted wood problem, although it's a significant investment of time to do that to several areas of hardware. I was thinking of trying it using an epoxy putty such as JB Weld as a filler.

Well, it doesn't look like I'll get a response from "Capt Don," so has anyone else used the method described in his link: cutting out the wood core using an allen wrench locked in a drill chuck, then refilling the void with an epoxy slurry?

I've used the method on my boats, I used Allen wrenches to make the tools. Also used a electric drill (I found the battery drills didn't have the needed torque).
A piece of blue masking tape on the bottom of the hole, tape also around the hole on the deck. I first used just epoxy letting it soak into the plywood, then mixed in 406 Colloidal Silica or 407 low density filler to fill the hole.
I found local farm stores have the best price on the syringes.

Thanks to all

I think I'll take advice from all of you, and prepare the holes as described on the west website with epoxy, then bed the hardware with butyl tape as described by mainse sail.
Thanks Capt. Don 01 for the West Epoxy website--lots of great info there.
