Hey - has anyone ever used a bean bag seat on a sailboat before? Just looking and thinking of Christmas gift ideas and I thought that would be a rather cool item to use say in the cockpit or really anywhere on deck. LEt me know your thoughts - Rob

Interesting idea

You certainly could plunk it down anywhere. I guess if you could find one that is made for outdoor use it would be a pretty comfortable seat. Don't forget that they are not known for their compactness, so storage might be an issue.

Beanbags

To Mike's point, storage might be an issue, along with not necessarily being the most secure seat while underway. While heeling, I can see one of 2 scenarios - either it sliding or it rolling the sitter right out of it. Now at the dock, I think it would be a great seat. Hmm, I've seen those inflatable chairs. Maybe something like that? They look comfortable (I've never sat in one) and storage wouldn't be an issue. T J

Massive Bean-Laden Explosion!!!

Rob, A friend tried a similar bean-stuffed cushion on his boat with disastrously messy results. An errant wave into the cockpit totally soaked the cushion on which his new spouse was sitting. The subsequent chemical reaction between the salt-water and the rapidly-swelling beans caused the cushion to quickly inflate. Without warning, a massive 'bean-laden' explosion rocked the cockpit and resulted in the skipper having to scrape beans off his boat for months afterwards. At the subsequent divorce proceedings, his former spouse cited his constantly exposing her to marine dangers as a reason for the marriage ending. Probably similar reaction following refried beans at a Mexican restaurant. Osama

on the hook/dock

I am thinking it would be ideal for lounging on the hook or at the dock. maybe we should invent a marine-version filled with styrofoam peanuts so it dubbs as an approved USCG approved thowing device.

Bean Bag Chairs

I remember a thread on another site a year or so ago that talked about bean bag chairs. There is a company that makes them out of sunbrella fabrics for use on boats. I don't remember which site it was on though. sorry I can't help out more

bag o' beans

I used a couple of them for years on my boats. They're great. Even undeway, heeling. Toss it into the leeward corner of the cockpit, next to the pulpit and steer with one foot on the wheel. With someone to keep an eye out to weather, it's Nirvana! Remove about a third of the styrofoam pellets to make them more form-fitting. They're cheap, easy to use, easy to store (toss them into a corner) and easy to replace if needed. I bought two of those folding seats now, but a bean bag has its place.

Ask Bly at this site....

We purchased one about 8 years ago and I'm pretty sure it came from the HOW site, but gosh that's a long time ago for my memory to be 100%. It's made of Sunbrella, navy blue to match our other Hunter canvas and is the most sought after seat in the house when the boat is flat at anchor or otherwise. Very comfy, very durable, the only downside is storage space. I don't see them in the chandlery on this site now but try asking Bly at the 'Contact Us' button on this site--she would remember if they ever carried them. Or just Google for 'Boat Bean Bags', which I just did and found some hits.

Freebag

Got one for my wife last year. It's a great gift that she'll love. Probably one of the better gifts I've ever given mine. It's called Freebag and is anything but free at $100. It stores just about anywhere and since she continues to rave about it was well worth the money. Here are two websites that carry it. Happy shopping. http://www.4theboat.com http://www.sailorsams.com
