Can anyone from Massachusetts confirm for me what I've been told about homeowners insurance and boats. I was told by a marine insurance salesman that homeowners policies cover boats up to but not including 26'. Does this cover liabilities and how much? Any info. greately appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Check with Agent

Hi Mark, I checked with my Agent on the Cape, and it seemed that a separate policy was best. I got one thru the Hartford (not my house insurance carrier which is Hingham) for pretty short money. There is even a $25 rider that will pay up to $2,000 to pull or relocate the boat if a hurricane is forecast. Since the real worry is liability, for an oils spill or medical claim, for example, I would not trust the homeowners. I would hate to lost the boat, but in my case the boat is hardly worth big bucks. With toys, my father always said if you couldn't aford to lose them, you should not have them. Roger C27 #5012 &Mabel Cape Cod

needs to stick to selling boats

your homeowners coverage extends to row boats and canoes. for anything else buy boatowners policy.

Not really . . .

Only small boats, like a dinghy or a canoe, possibly a sunfish would be covered under your homeowners policy for general liability. If you have a boat of any substance, you will need a boat owners policy to properly cover it. You may also want to consider an umbrella policy on top of all that. Regards, Ted

Umbrella policy

My H170 is covered under the $1M umbrella policy I added to my homeowners. Not cheap, but I needed it for other reasons. It does have a max length, but I don't have the policy easily available to tell you what that is.

Chuck, if your H170

has any kind of a kicker on her, you might better read the policy or call your agent.
