Looking for opinions on the bayfield 25. By the numbers it is not too impressive. Anyone with first hand experience as the numbers can lie? Would it be near the top of your list if looking for a boat in the 20-26' range?? New sailor for bay sailing on the Gulf Coast (Destin,Fl) Tom

Performance vs. Comfort

Hi Tom - I think anyone would attest that the Bayfields aren't on the performance end of the spectrum, but they sure have a lot of space for their size. I personally like the clipper bow and wide beam - cool looking boats! Bayfields (i.e. Gozzards later) are well built and hold their value well. And they have character. Depends on what you value! See Related links for some owner reviews. Have fun shopping! Trevor

It's a good looking little lady.

Tom, In Indiantown Fla, at the Marina, there is a Bayfield 25 or 27 on a trailer and it's a very nicely shaped boat both above and below the waterline. They are a bit heavier that similar sized boats but appear to have a lot more interior room in both width and headroom. If overnighting and trips of 4 to 10 days are in your future then this could be a good boat. Speed suffers for creature comfort but it is no dog by any means. Have it surveyed or otherwise checked out by a knowledgable sailor and go for it. DON'T BUY A FIXER-UP BOAT UNLESS YOU HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF MONEY or are very, very good at mechanical repairs yourself. Most new sailors that buy these kinds of boats usually sour on sailing quickly. The boat we sawwas not for sale but I drooled just the same. Ray

i too have looked at the bayfield 25....

personally i have no "hands on" experience but what i do know is they changed interior design around 77/78 i think. went from more wood, porta potti, less headroom to marine head, more grp looking interior and i think maybe an inch or so more headroom. i've seen one go on ebay for $7k and see listings in the $10k- $12k range. sure a pretty boat with a good "pocket cruiser" reputation. i read that the,(8hp is it), yanmar is a bit anemic for the boats weight. think there are some interior design options too....dinette, aft galley etc but this may have just varied between yr models. i'll include a link to a bayfield 29. (my "25" link no longer works but this site has some other bayfield links.) the link didn't work so heres the long ver: http://www.tcc.on.ca/~dbieman/b29/
