Battery terminal fire

Recently, my 1996 boat burnt due to corrosion at the battery terminals and being in a salt environment. There was no obvious ball of green and white residue I sometimes experience on my car. Is this a common problem with a Hunter 336?

WOAH !! That is not a good one! Sorry to hear that, Vezel. Battery terminals on boats in general will work themselves loose because of the wave motion and because boats typically vibrate more than cars do. Once the terminal gets a little loose, the heating from the bad connection will thermally cycle the connection and add another loosening tendancy.. It will continue to loosen until it will get really hot when passing lots of amperes, like starting, and could cause a fire.. Good to check/clean/retighten battery terminals every couple of years or so.. Another thing that can happen is a battery explosion when a battery has been charged hard or discharged hard and a small spark occurs at a terminal because of a bad connection.. again bad connection is the key..Can be either positive or negative connection. No ball of green gunk is necessary.. Can and will happen at the starter connection, the engine ground strap, and the battery selector switch as well. Probably not specific to H 336, unless there is a strange kind of battery terminal that is unique to that boat..?? Oh yeah.. could be a bad crimp-on terminal too.. the copper wire end that bolts to the connector.

Vezel, was your boat moored in Sarasota Bay when it burned? I have pictures of someone's boat burning and right after the fire was put out by the FD just last thursday. Big fire and not much left but the hull.

My surveyor recommended replacing the wing nuts on the battery with locking nuts to prevent just such a problem. something I had never even considered.

Probably would make you feel more secure .. I don’t think it is a requirement, but if that keeps the surveyor happy.. carry on ! It certainly can’t hurt. I’ll bet most folks on this site have wing nuts on terminals.?? The wing nuts will be ok if they are tight.. and the connection is clean and secure. The crimp-on terminal at the end of the wire should be checked very carefully to be sure it is contacting the battery terminal well and it is clean. There should be no washer under the connector, it is OK to have one on top under the nut. (connector should press on the battery terminal directly)

ABYC standards

There is a change to the ABYC standards on battery terminal attachment. They are recommending nuts with locking washers and dis-recommending wing nuts.
Seems there are cases of the wing nuts coming loose, and causing problems.

I know I can get a wrenched nut tighter than a wing nut every day of the week.

Good one, Bill .. I didn't know the recommendation had been added..

Wouldn't it be nice...

...for us everyday boaters to have access to the ABYC standards.
I know, we can buy them. Just seems that if it's safety recogommendations, they should be available.

Just use caution

Wrenches and batteries require so much care, you are working with a lot of amps here, please use extreme caution when using wrenches around th top of any battery.
