Hi there,

I just bought a 1988 Beneteau 285, and there is plenty of stuff to fix before I get it on the water. One area of concern is the battery setup. There are two batterys, and the terminals I believe are original.
I need to find covers for the terminals, but what I have seen on the web would not work for these things. The owners book is too general, and I dont think that Beneteau is going to be of much help.
If anyone out there has run into this issue, what did you do?
Is there a place that I might find terminal covers that would fin these things?

Photos of the terminals would help, since that would pretty much determine what terminal covers will fit.

I'd point out that you probably should have the batteries in battery boxes and that they should have covers. This would be better than just terminal covers.

Thanks for the reply.
This is the first boat I have had in 40 years, and the last one was a sea scow, so this is all new. I think I will go with the boxes if they will fit in the compartment space.

Glad to help.

Don't forget to bolt the boxes down or otherwise secure them...

The important thing is to make sure the terminals cannot short out. A cover over the batteries will do the job w/o having to put specific covers on terminals.

All who have replied to this question.
I'm going to take measurements this weekend, and see what I can do with the space available. I appriciate your responses.
Happy sailing

I like the use of battery boxes because besides protecting the battery and terminals from any unwanted contact, they will also contain any acid boilover. Battery terminal covers would only protect against accidental shorting, which shouldn't happen if the batteries are installed in a safe, closed-off area.

It's good to put marine grease on the battery terminals after connecting up the battery in the spring, to help retard surface corrosion.
