Battery Location

I am now the 3rd or 4th owner of this particular Catalina 30 and in the process of deconstructing all of the various modifications that have been done. The one that now has my attention is the location of the batteries for this vessel. I need to relocate them to a safe place. (See horror story below.) Right now they are on wooden beds next to the engine. I don't believe that this is their original, or optimal location. (Neither have battery tie downs and it seems that one of the beds became detached.) I am thinking about relocating them below one of the port salon seats. I am looking for someplace that is secure and away from water. Any ideas? Fair winds, etc. Bob (About a month after I took posession of my Catalina 30 I discovered a leak coming from the raw water filter which had been causing a serious flooding issue. The leak from the filter had been caused by one of the batteries pushing the water filter against a mounting arm for the generator. The gradual pushing and wearing away created a 1/4" square hole in the filter. This unsecured battery had created this major headache.)

My 83 Catalina 30 has the two batteries under the nav table secured in plastic containers and tied down with straps.

Nav StationThanks

John, Thanks. In some old documentation that I found, it seems that both the battery and selector switch were by the Nav station. As I wrote, it seems that there have been several modifications made to this boat and it seems that this was one. Anyone know of other locations?

Catalina moved things around early models

My '87 had the batteries under the starboard settee, just forward of the nav station. The aft drinking water tank was under the forward portion of that same settee. The batteries were in battery boxes and secured into a wooden frame that was glassed into the the storage area under the settee. This location for the batteries and the water tank effectively eliminated the settee as a place to store stuff. With the holding tank under the starboard settee, and the water heater under the aft berth (about on center and in front of the fuel tank), there wasn't much storage space left. Model Change - Battery Relocation

Hey Bob. You did not mention the year of your Catalina but if you have the nav. station with the louvered doors (boxed unit), then most likely the batteries were nested at the bottom. If you have an opening just forward of the nav. station under the starboard settee, you could tell if the batteries were placed at that location by locating the holes cut thru the glass for the cables that were fed thru the nav. station to the panel. My 1988 model has the changed nav. station and the batteries are in the settee area. At the port side, their is so much going on between the engine, holding tank, water pump, exhaust lift muffler, water and waste hoses and thru hull valves that if you elect to keep the batteries in that location, they certianly have to be very SECURE. I would recomend the starboard side as originally designed to optimize security, access, vapor ventilation and peace of mind. Bob

Thanks guys

Thanks Bob & Steve for the additional information. My C30 is a 1978 (Hull # 806). It is sounding more and more that was the manufacturer's intent. Why a/the previous owner moved it is a mystery to me. (There have been other mods that were made like an AC powered refrigerator which is only useful when tied to the dock and hooked up to shore power.) I plan to take photos of the offending raw water filter and do a posting about what happens when batteries are not secoured. Thanks again to all. I'll probably do the batter move this weekend. It is outrageously warm today and tomorrow.
