I'm getting too old to lean into the starboard lazarette to check battery water levels. Anyone have suggestions for an alternate location? How about under the helmsman's seat?

Like where they are.

Too many reasons to keep the rear lazarettes accessible. I went with Gels to solve the same problem. Never touch them. They stay on the boat through a five month haulout and start the Yanmar first time we try in April. And don't need boxes with covers. Good thing, those babies are heavy!

'gree with Ed.

Jerry: I agreee with Ed. When it's time to replace your batteries think about 'upgrading' to gel or AGM type batteries. I had a couple of West Marine Gel's and they laster for 10 years. This was without every looking at them or even thinking about them. The first time I needed to think about them was when my boat would not start. Replaced the Gels with AGM's hope I get 10 years from the AGM's.

I moved them

I have 3 batteries under the rear lazzerete and one in starboard. I use these (3) for house power and the one in the lazzerete as a starter battery. It's much easier to get to BUT - much harder to get to rudder post and overboard discharge hoses. Thinking about gel one of these days and may shift batteries back to original position. I don't know how they would fit (unless the previous owner removed some brackets?). Not much flat room at the bottom Charlie

Charlie, plenty of room. . . .

in starboard locker. I have two Gels on the bottom in the original battery location. The starter battery is immediately below the battery switch and runs athwartship. Behind it, one of three house Gels lies fore/aft. On the back of the icebox is mounted a Heart Inverter. On the shelf behind it are two more house Gels. Nothing required but holddown straps and those rubber covers over the posts. Still plenty of room in that locker. In fact, behind the batteries and under the coaming is a refrigeration compressor.

Ed, you broke up!

Ed, Seems like you thread response concerning room for batteries in the starboard locker is incomplete. Please try again, I would like to move my batteries back but did not find the space. Kalaukia is a 84 model, refrigeration unit takes most room over icebox along with a 1K inverter. No room behind battery switch as it is mounted under companionway entrance, believe all thats behind bulkhead is engine compartment. I can sympathize with Jerry where he stated he didn't like leaning over the opening to the locker. First your hair, then your knees - it's getting harder to crawl into the little pukas (holes). E-mail Charlie?

Not sure what you meant by incomplete or "broke-up". I'd be willing to explain further to try to clarify. My address here at Firestone(yes, we are still in business!) is: schencked@bfusa.com
