My deep cycle battery on my 1992 H23 leaks. The chambers are down just a little and I have had this problem since last spring. I have topper it off with distilled water a few times. Since the battery is in a plastic box (bottom of box is wet - maybe 1/8" of fluid) it doesn't create a mess. Any thoughts or ideas? thanks Gary

Are You Overcharging

If you overcharge your battery the fluid can vaporize and thus create what appears to be a leak. The deep cycle chargers are supposed to cut off and only trickle charge after your battery is charged but I had the top blown off a battery with one of the "trickle" chargers. Good Luck. Dave Laing

Check your caps, Dave

Dave, the vents in battery caps can clog...when the battery gases, the gas cannont escape and, eventually, kaboom! Could this have been the problem?

Batteries don't leak.

Gary, Batteries can freeze, and crack, if in a low charge state with very cold temps, or they can crack through mechanical damage or abuse, thereby causing fluid loss. Other than that they don't lose the amount of fluid you are speaking of unless they are subjected to overcharging, the vent holes are plugged or it is subjected to very extremely hard usage. If you have been topping off the cell fluid levels to the upper limit of full, like maybe too full, that could also cause fluid loss. The proper level is between the top of the cell plates (lower level) and the cell cap lower ring (upper level). Or in simple words, fill it 1/8th to 1/4 inch above the cell plates. If the battery is in good shape, cap vents open, and not overly worked, I would look at the charging system. Both shore powered and onboard powered. Both a damaged and leaking battery, or a over charging system that causes the battery to expell gas and fluid are VERY DANGEROUS CONDITIONS. Hope this helps, Ray

Thanks All

Thanks for the comments. ON my H23 I have a solar panel with a device that prevents overcharging. During the winter, I store it with my mast in the basement and use a battery charger every week or so which has an auto shutoff, so I'm stumped. I'll clean up the battery, caps and box and watch closely. Thanks again. Gary
