My 3 Rolls batteries are in basement for the Winter. When I put charger on them from time to time, should caps be in place or removed. Yanmar manual says when charging to remove caps but there is no mention of this in Rolls documentation nor in charger manual. Happy Holidays, Bob Pilgrim

remove

Remove the caps. Charging releases hydrogen. Should a vent be plugged the preasure of released hydrogen could damage the battery case.

Phil's got it right...

Dec.23,2000 Dear Bob, The Rolls batteries are vented so technically you don't need to remove the caps while charging, but when you've got them at home to charge Phil's advice is right and in my opinion the better practice. Remove the caps and check if the vents appear clean, particularly on the underside. I wipe the caps and clean any stubborn visible obstructions out of the vent hole with a needle and give them a blast of compressed air. I then would leave the caps perched in the holes but completely loose to act as dust covers ( my basement ceilings were really dusty and I owned a compressor) . This allowed the gas to escape while charging but helped keep dirt out. I hope this helps. Merry Christmas to you and yours Bob.
