Battery charger vs alternator....

Have a Guest 2614 battery charger on my boat. If I start the engine before turning off the shore power and/or the battery charger, is there any danger of doing damage to either the battery charger or the alternator? In practice, I don't do it this way, but interested in whether or not today's automatic battery charges sense the current from the alternator and protect itself.

From the perspective that you mention, I don't think there is any big concern, but it has been said that it is best to unplug the shorepower before starting your inboard engine.
