I have tried two Guest chargers one recommended by West marine and the second recomended by Guest. I want a simple smart charger to use dockside on my 28.5 Hunter that can also work as a dockside power source. The Guest models were said to be up to the task. The problem is that both models cause significient FM radio interference and they completely knock out my VHF. I noticed that Charles advertises that their chargers filter out RFI and meet FCC guidlines. anyone else have this problem and have you found a solution. By the way a cheap car charger that i have used up until now does not cause any interference. I do want a permanite installation though. Jeff

Smart Chargers for House Bank

Take a look at A & A Engineering web site linked here. I learned about their products from a HAM radio operator friend. I later built one of their 1 amp units for the battery used by my glider radio, and loved it. If I needed to replace one of the 2 I have on my boat, I would look seriously at ther product first. Some of their models are available as either factory built or kit, some factory only. Read their FAQ page, they discuss RF interference. As to whether or not they would carry your dockside load, you will have to do the math.

Before you go buy a new one

I suspect that your charger unit is too close to your VHF antenna feed or you VHF antenna ground is not up to snuff. Almost all VHF interferrance problems are due to routing and grounding of electrical items.

check this...

See if the interference is coming via the antenna or from the 12volt power source. Disconnect the chargers from the battery leave them on and see if you still have the interference.
