Battery Cables to Motor

I have a new motor for my 23.5 Hunter with electric start. Where would be the best spot to feed the battery cables through the hull to the motor. I'd like to do this right the first time.

Plug on Transom

Nick, I believe Crazy Dave or Hunter did mine when my boat was new. He/they installed a 30 amp 125 volt shore power connector with a weather cover on the starboard side of the motor well and ran the cables under the aft berth up to the battery. Then installed the 30 amp 125 volt female connector on the cable from the motor. This provides a few benefits. 1) it provides a water tight connector so you don't allow water in the boat through an open hole. 2) it provides an easy means to disconnect the motor from the battery. 3) it is neat and out of the way so you don't have cables running through your cockpit. To visualize where the shore power connector goes, stand in the cockpit looking aft. Look down in the motor well and the vertical flat area of the transom on your left is where my connector is installed. The shore power connector is a little costly but I think you need something that can handle amps is why they used that type. This connector also doubles as a point for me to connect my solar panels witout having to run the cable through the cockpit to my battery in the cabin. Good luck.

Plug for motor

Nick - What I used for my H-260 with electric start outboard is a trolling motor plug and receptacle (ex. W/M #1422591). Be sure that it is rated for the amperage of your motor starter. The receptacle mounts on a bulkhead under the cockpit that adjoins the battery compartment and the plug mounts on the motor cord. It is heavy duty, has a waterproof cover (with some added sealer), works great and there is no chance that a 120 volt electrical cord could be plugged into it by mistake. Let us know how it goes.
