New to sailing. Replaced all rigging that was needed. Stepped mast and partially raised mainsail for the first time today! Noticed my batten (second from top) on a Hunter 23.5 is about 5 inches short of what it should be! Can this boat be sailed with a missing batten? Can anything be used safely as a temp. fix? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes I have a solution for a batten. My batten was ejected from the sail. What can you use? If you can think of the kids bicycles - they have this 6 foot fiberglass poles that they use to mark their presence. They are about 1/4" in diameter. I bought one of those and cut it to size and placed 2 of them next to each other and tied them to each other with a sail thread and inserted them into the pocket where the original batten was. It works great. Try them. Let me know - have fun.

Why not look at one of the okay ones and take it to a sailmaker or chandlery to see if they can match it.
Alternatively, if the maker's name is on one of the other battens you should be able to buy on line.
It is normal to cut a slightly oversize batten to length.

Please don't sail without this batten, or with the too short one in the pocket, as the flogging leach can do untold, and often unseen, damage to a nice sail.

In a pinch as up here theres nothing in the way of stores could you get away with using 1/2"pvc pipe? cap or tape the ends and slide it in there.

I would not use anything like PVC, which isn't flat like a batten. I'd be afraid the diameter would stretch out or rip the seams in the batten pockets, doing more expensive damage to the sail - especially as it flexed in the wind. I think I'd sail lacking the batten before I'd shove in PVC.

You can buy battens online at places like Defender.com, Pyacht.com, etc. The shipping can be a bit steep, since they are oversized. If you have a good supply store nearby, so much the better. They are flat fiberglass strips, about 3/4 inch wide (or larger, depending on your sail). If they don't have your length, get one size larger and just cut it with a saw, like a hacksaw. I also added batten end caps to mine, which are softer rubber caps that help keep the sharp ends of the battens from sawing through the sail. If your one batten is too short, have you checked that all are actually in the right pockets? Maybe that one belongs in a shorter pocket and you are actually missing a different one?

I don't think there would be a problem getting a sailmaker to send you one. I don't think it would be a big expense either.
My vertical battens are round. They are also solid fiberglass.

I can guarantee two things: yes, a sail loft will send you a batten. And two, they will charge an arm and a leg. I could not believe what North gets for a three foot batten. True, they are labeled for the correct slot and have nice ends. But geez.
