I have a Hunter 34 circa 1983 with O'Brien sails. I need to replace the battens but am not sure wether to go with 1 1/2 in or 2 inch battens. Any advice. The slot seems to be able to hold a 2 inch and is 28 inches long. Help please. Thanks, Rook

If it takes a 2 batten...

...then go for it. Just be sure it's not too tight or it not slops around in the pocket. It should be a comfortable fit. I used the WM 1.5" when I replaced some missing ones a few years ago on my L37 and 1.5" was the proper size for that sail. But I did have some old ones to show me the width that I needed.

In this case, bigger is not necessarily better. Wider battens means they are stiffer. The job of the batten is to hold the leech of the sail in proper shape. But it also needs to be flexible. If the 11/2" batten does the job then a 2" will probably be too stiff. I might suggest you take a look at tapered battens for best sail shape.
