i just acquired a 1995 Hunter 336 with 4 battens in the mainsail. The batten adjustment is an adjusting screw (next to the luff) which controls how much tension that you apply to the batten. How tight should this screw be ?

336 batten adjustment

We run the screw in until the head of the screw is flush with the top of the nylon sleeve. We are more worried about the screw backing out than the tension of the batten.

Adjustment is made dependent on wind conditions. As the breeze increases the tension in the batten can be eased. Also in ultra light conditions the battens need to be eased to flatten the main very much like the outhaul and cunningham on a standard main. For general use a modest amount of batten tension should suffice.
