Basic Sailing Video

I believe my wife would enjoy sailing a lot more if she understood better what was going on. Also, I think a good place to start would be a video on the sport, I would appreciate recommendations from you all about videos you have seen or used for this purpose.

Sailing wife

I had to deal with the same problem. When I got married almost 2 years ago, my wife had never even been on water. The solution for me was to spend one night each weekend sleeping on the boat. She discovered how comfortable it is to sleep on a sailboat. Then I would take her out sailing only in the Bay. Nothing out where she could not see the shore, and we took another couple with us sailing so that she could interact with other people and wives who liked sailing. Also, teach her to steer the boat and let her do that. You should be the one handling the sails and doing all of the work. Just let her do the steering. Now my wife will quickly climb up to reef the sails ect ect ect. She looks forward to being on the boat now.

Sam, when we started sailing eight years ago (an H26) we found a great video called "Sailing with Confidence" -from Bennett Marine Video, catalog # Y380. It's a 90 minute tape that covers everything from riggings, leaving a mooring, reading the water, helmsmanship, maneuvers, handling gusts,MOB, etc. All the action takes place on a '24 Rainbow. My wife has probably watched the tape a dozen times. We also find helpful to show to friends who have never been out on a boat and may be apprehensive about sailing (especially with us!). It compares 2 boats that are trimmed differently.And it's not for racers but for familysailing. Just to understand what happens when you do or don't do one thing or another.Toomas

Basic Sailing

Have her take a basic sailing class. She will listen to someone else a heck of a lot better and I think she'll enjoy it. And yes, she will learn and it's not expensive for a 2 day class.
