Anyone ever used Barska 7x30 Deep Sea Binoculars? Less than $100 for binoculars with compass and rangefinder! I've looked around the web and there don't seem to be any user reviews.

BTW, I've been told that for old eyes like mine, that 7X30 binoculars are just as useful as the more commonly used 7X50.

It's your money.

Me, I'm too poor to get anything but the best. Well, good enough, anyway. ;)

I'd save up to get a pair of those image stabilization ones I've been reading about.

Don't know about those but do prefer the 7 x 30 magnification at sea as they do cut down on the jarring and easier to find the target.

7 x 50 and 7 x 30 both magnify seven times so both will have the same blur from movement.
The 50 mm objective lens size will gather more light so should be better for older eyes. I wish they made 5 or 6 x 50.

The 7x50 has a wider field & is therefore more useful on a moving sailboat. Moreover it's the same price as the 7x30... I'm 68 & for my "old" eyes I would choose a 7x50 anytime over a 7x30 & guess what... it's the same price $97.16 on Amazon :) Quality wise, I can't tell as I'm a lucky b... Sundance former owner (Hi Bob!) left his old but optically perfect waterproof Zeiss 7x50 :D but without compass :(

Oups ! I've just read the following comment on Amazon on the 7x50 & I don't see why it would be different for the 7x30 (Same manufacturer)
"I'm always on the lookout for a bargain, but these binoculars were not it. The optics were fair, but not bright. Most importantly, the pair I received were not waterproof. If you plan to take these boating and store them in a humid environment, be prepared for fogging problems. In addition, the focus adjustment is very poorly engineered. The internal compass was well lit, but is not damped well enough for small boat use. Spend a bit more for something better."

The Bushnell seems for $30 more to be much much better :) Also I was told that for a perfect waterproofing you need to have independant focusing rings (Zeiss & Busnell) rather than a single central one (Barsak)

Bought an old pair of 7x50 Fujinon fmtrc-sx from friend getting out of sailing. These old monsters are heavy but have absolutely the best optics with amazing light transmission. Find a used pair on E-bay. They are expensive but the best non-electronic binocular out there.

I agree, Fujinon are first class: I have 10x70 (5°18) that I use for stargazing on a tripod (Useless on a moving sailboat of course) & they are perfect !

For sailboat binocular with compass check "Bushnell Marine 7x50 Binoculars Review"

I own the Bushnells

I have had my pair for several years and love them. I especially like that they are infinite focus with individual adjustments for each eye. Really handy. I also thought the light gather was BS, but in a night race an older friend recommended I try that and it is true. I put the battery in for lighting up the compass and it has been over 3 years and still kicking. :D

I think the individual focus is related to their waterproofing.

Good battery life. :)

I had a pair of Barska 7X50. Paid about $100.00. They were seriously "un collimated" and difficult to use. I tried contactiing their customer service on a different issue but couldn't get a response. I replaced the Barskas with Nikon 7X50 Action, $130.00. The Nikons are unbelieveablely better, brighter, collimated and a pleasure to use. I contacted Nikon Customer service, it was easy peasy. In conversation, I asked about a 30 year old pair of 10X50 binocs I had dropped off a shelf. If I could prove I was the original owner, free repair. Since I couldn't, I had to pay a $10.00 repair charge. Yes, that is ten dollars. Nikon could not repair the 10X50's so they gave me a new pair. Based on quality and support, in my mind you cannot beat Nikon. Other than being a happy customer, I have no connection to Nikon. I eventually took the Barskas apart and got the collimation much better. I give them to guests and small children to use.

If it's all about money, I've no suggestions. But if it's about having a pair of binoculars that actually do the job superlatively, then please consider the Canon image stabilized binos. With image stabilization you can move up to 10 power and have a better, lighter instrument.
When I bought mine I was so sure they were a con that I made absolutely certain that they could be returned at zero cost to me. Needless to say, I didn't return them.
This is the greatest innovation in small craft navigation since the introduction of our modern compact chartplotters.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am surprised that if these binoculars are so bad, that many reputable stores carry them.

I bought a pair 7 years ago. After 4 years moisture got in and fogged the inside. Called customer service (I had no problem getting through on 1st attempt) and for $50 they sent out a new pair. So far the 2nd pair is fine, although the internal compass (or the optics to it) moved slightly and is no longer centered. Still useable, and overall I am happy with the product for the price.

EDIT: Sorry I have the 7X50.

The cheap binoculars that I have acquired, if they're out of whack between eyeballs, I'll just cut them in two, and have a monocle for two stations.

What's the word for "out of whack"? Uncalibrated?

For a one-eyed man like me, that's what I do with most of them. Except my Nikons.....I haven't the heart to cut them in two..

Bushwhackers or whatever......the saw baby.

Barska is cheap Chinese garbage. Pretty much anything less than the 300 dollar price point is a cheap overseas import.

Does the right eyepiece not adjust? Normally, you focus with your left eye and then turn the right eyepiece until it's in focus. From there on you use the main focus wheel to focus for both eyes.

The official word for "out of whack" is "discombobulated." The antonyms for both are "in whack" and "combobulated."

No amount of independent focussing would bring both sets of lenses into combobulation. They were that discombobulated. :D
