What does it entail? Do I need it and is $2100 a good price for my '81 28'?

Unless you are seeing the beginning of blistering or the gelcoat has been destroyed by improper sanding, no.

Turns out that some hulls absorb moisture via osmosis which can cause osmotic blistering. Barrier coating prevents moisture from getting to the laminate layers of a hull and prevents such blistering. There's a wealth of information online concerning the topic, some very contradictory.

To Don's point, the first question is why has this been suggested to you? Perhaps you could post a pic of your existing bottom? Some blistering is purely cosmetic and does not affect the laminate layers. Larger blisters can be a real issue.

Depends on what's included for the price. If that means appropriately prep'ing the bottom by scraping, sanding, etc. the existing bottom paint down to the gel coat plus the paint. Yeah, that's a great price. Having gone through the process, I'd had gladly paid $2100.

What's the value of the boat? I saw a 1986 28 on Yachtworld for 13,900. Yours is a little older so maybe 12G? This is like an insurance policy, 2100 is a high percentage of the value of the boat. For some people the value is worth more to them then the monetary value, but it is a lot to spend on something you won't recover in a resale and if the boat doesn't have a problem after 35 years it might not be needed. Most of the cost will be labor so if you do it yourself I'd say it is worth it, otherwise, maybe not.

I had the bottom of my previous boat scraped and sanded to the gel coat.
I did the barrier coating myself not a big deal saved lots of money. I also did the 2 coats of red pca gold from westmatine best bottom paint ever, and 2 coats of black.
The red is an indicator coat so I know where to touch up the black.
I used an ablative multi season paint and didn't have to bottom paint for 3 seasons.

Yeah - yachtworld... the broker has to be paid somehow, why not raise the price... A boat listed for $13k by a broker doesn't make it a $13k boat...

Like he said... gather some friends, buy some beer and pizza and have at it...

$2100 to paint the actual area on the bottom of a boat is a lot of money... That's like paying someone $2100 to paint your bedroom...

But where is the why?...
