I have two Barrient 24 winches and "first gear" in one of them no longer works, although I still have the counter-clockwise slow speed. I've had this boat less than a year, so I've never done any winch maintenance on this boat or any other and don't know where to begin. I've searched the net looking for an exploded view but found nothing. Any ideas or direction would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Harry, I've taken my Harken winches apart on our boat last week-end to service and maintaineance. It is not as difficult as it appears and what a difference it made! Try this link for general instructions from Harken: http://www.harken.com/winches/srvwinch.php I can only assume that there's not that much different from one manufacturer to another. Barient No Longer in Business
Barient is out of business so finding spare parts will be problematic. There is a rumor that ARCO in Australia has spare Barient parts. I have not had any luck contacting them. I hope my Barrients stay together until I can afford new winches.

Nothing from ARCO
I've tried emailing the ARCO website for repairing my broken selftailing mechanism on my Barient 22-39 and had no response. It's frustrating because they have a picture of the exact part I need, so if anyone knows of an alternate source please let me know.

At one time, Brian was negotiating with ARCO to be a distributor here in the US. I recall that he affirmed that they do, in fact, have Barient parts. He should be able to put you in contact with them. His website is www.anzam.com

I serviced my own ...
... and it wasn't a problem. Insert two screws into the small holes on the retaining cap, put a screw driver between them and remove the cap. Everything else will be obvious. Once apart you can see what's broken. Don't worry, the thingies (springs, pawls and such) won't fly out if they aren't broken, so the only loose objects you'll find are the broken pieces. The link will take you to a useful site.

Just because you've lost one of your gears doesn't necessarily mean something's broken. A gummed up or sticking pawl spring will cause that. I may just need to be taken apart & cleaned. You have the best on-line manual right across the cockpit. The other winch. Only take ONE apart at a time. Keep the other intact for reference. Go to my web site and check out what I did to my Barient 27, (starboard) back in the '80s.
