Hello folks, Had one of my winch drums lift slightly while sailing this weekend. Fortunately my son noticed it before anything went into the drink. Once on shore I took it apart and found the upper stainless snap ring is ok and functioning. The problem lies within the inner drum. All I had left inside was some rust remains. I need help please first of all on what holds the inner drum from lifting up and second what that locking device is called and perhaps some advice on finding one. The winch is a barient #10P circa 1980. Any help would be greatly apprciated. Scott "On Eagles Wings"

Did you try looking it up?

Barient winches has a couple of web sites that you can look up for parts breakdown etc. Gives you part names and numbers and where to order. You can also search the archives here (when they get back to working) and look up barient winches. Loads of info.

You know why they went out of business don't you,,

Thank Lewmar. Barient had the patent for the spring loaded self-tailing system. Lewmar could not successfully challenge the patent. (they tried) So they bought the company. End of Barient. Lewmar still does this. My Simpson Lawrence windless is sold as a Lewmar.

I found this site to be a good source of information for these and other winches no longer in production. www.cncphotoalbum.com/winches/barientndx.htm There is a schematic for the 10P. This was helpful when I took mine apart. Steve

Scott, we saw you yesterday ...

You must have the O'Day with the blue decks. We sail the Starwind 27 and keep her at Lees Park on a mooring. I think you were sailing past us while my wife was taking some pictures from our friends moondeck on Halsey Island. I wonder if she got you in any shots? There must have been some blow last week, our mooring dragged and our stern was only 15' off the end of the concrete pier yesterday. The mooring is a yard of concrete and our boat weighs about 5,200 lbs and we've never dragged before as far as I can tell. They are pulling the moorings today so we have her on a vacated slip right now. In a few weeks she'll be over at Barnes waiting to be pulled out for the winter. How long do think we have left? This is the time of year when the wind blows hard and cold and the powerboats leave the lake to us!

I had some Barient #10's

on a previous boat. If I recall, the outer drum is held in place by a split ring at the top of the spindle. Around the spindle is a gear race which will slide up and off once the drum is removed. There are probably two upper and two lower pawls and springs. Remove them carefully as they will want to go overboard. These are very simple winches and should last a long time if maintained. I think the split ring is the only thing that holds the drum, and the innards, on. I had a pawl spring disintegrate on one of my winches, making the removal of the drum very hard. I basically levered it up with a crow bar all around the base, and used a thin piece of plywood under the crow bar to keep from damaging the combing. I cleaned up the race and spindle with mineral spirits and greased them with lithium before reassembly. I was not sure how to replace the spring as Barient is/was out of business. As it turned out, I had a Lewmar rebuild kit and tried the pawls and springs from it. They fit and worked perfectly. You may want to try this.

Diagram

Steve thank you very much for the link the diagram will be very helpful to me. It looks like from the drawing my release plunger-barlock has returned to dust, for all I had was some rusty remains left in a grove in the inner drum. Any idea what I could use to replace this? Thanks again for the help Scott "On Eagles Wings"

Yes it was

Yes Scott that would have been us out on the lake yesterday. It was a good day to be a sailboat. That is really scary that you draged your mooring. Saturday the winds were a good 20-25 knots and blowing large waves right at you. If your mooring draged I would guess that would have been on Saturday. I was on the lake Saturday with two of my teenage sons and it was very challanging and fun. We had a great time. Wife and I sailed to the dam yesterday and water was still flowing over the top. I do not know when they are planning to pull the plug. We plan to stay in to mid November. I will keep an eye for you on the water and say hi. Enjoy the fall and the lake without the powerboaters in the mean time. Scott "On Eagles Wings"

Great Scott !

There are two Scotts sailing on Lake Hopatcong and posting on this site? This could get confusing. You guys will have to identify yourselves when you post. I suggest Starwind Scott and Oday Scott. Starwind Scott, that was a very nice gesture you made to Nice n' Easy last week. By the way, I'll be leaving my slip for a long weekend this Saturday in case you wanted to stop by and say Bon Voyage (my Champagne of choice is Korbel). I think you can probably make it to my slip in about 4-5 hrs. I'll keep my eye out for you! Fair Winds, Tom s/v Orion's Child

Sorry Tom!

You don't qualify! You have to be purchasing a vessel in New Jersey and about to embark on an ocean voyage! Wow Scott, you really strike out for the remote corners of the lake! Didn't you come out of Byram Cove when we saw you over by Halsey Island? We've never sailed all the way down to the State Park. We will probably take our boat over to Barnes the weekend after next and let them pull it out when it is convenient. If I take her there too early, their slips are really exposed to northwest winds that can really gale in the fall and they are a little too narrow for our boat when the wind is blowing that hard, so I would rather keep her at Lee's until Barnes is ready to take her out.

Barient 10P winch parts

Thanks for the information and help you folks have given me. I just E-mailed the company in Australia with the necessary information, hopefully they will be able to help me. To the other Scott in Lk Hopatcong, yes we were sailing from Byram cove when you saw us, we were wondering why you kept tacking back anf forth at Halsey Island, but now we know. We have found the state park the best place to launch and retrive our boat, steep ramp and the depth seams to be just about right. They had the dock out earlier this summer and we wanted to make sure it was back in the water. I lauuched at Lee's one time and we were about to aboart, rehook the cable and go elsewere when the boat just rolled of the trailer into the lake. I thought we toasted the boat, however nothing bad happened and no damage, just to the nerves of me and my family. The ramps at Lee's level out and don't drop off, I don't know why the built them like that. Anyhow we will leave those ramps to the power boaters and haul at the state park. I don't know when we will be out over the weekend but we will be We will keep an eye out for you. Scott "On Eagles Wings"

Ebay

I always see winch's on EBay and for a good deal, I bought 2 that way and also replaced my Barient 21 mains with 2 new Harken self tailing, when I bought the Harkens from a dealer they had a promotion that after you buy a winch and return your old one's they sent me 375.00 for each winch,I happen to have had a couple of Barient 10's hanging around from my old Bristol and gave them for rebate and still have the 21's in the shed. But what a home run getting that much money for some old winch's

Thanks Rad

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately I missed this one. I hate it when work gets in the way of sailing. I fixed mine temporaraly with a piece of cable inserted into the grove to last out the season. I will keep checking Ebay. I did find a Barient kit on line, I just need to call them for it does not specify the winches they were meant to rebuild. Scott "On Eagles Wings"
