Barnicles on Prop and total loss of power

I left my mooring as usual this weekend under power (31' Hunter 1984)and the boat just was not moving forward at all.I gave it as much throttle as possible and still little or no forward movement. To make a long story short I made it right back to the mooring under power with great difficultly. I jumped into the cold water in the LOng Island sound and found my prop covered with barnicles. Could this cause this loss of forward movement?? After cutting my hand I did manage to scrape some of them off. THanks Again, Richard

prop problem

Barnicles on the bottom or prop are a real problem. I have uses the multi-year bottom paint w/ good success, but on the prop???? Last spring, I tried a combination of varnish & rep pepper. All the old guys at the marina said it would work =, wrong. Any ideas for next year? tom

Paint it.

As I stated in another post, I use bottom paint on the shaft and prop. It has always worked for me and I get minimal growth.

TRY GETTING THRUST FROM A BALL

two ways to handle the problem one: after sailing for the day, place a plastic bag aroung the prop with a wire tie, when you start the engine to go sailing again, the bag will discentergrate, Two: take a paper towel center cardboard tube, melt wax (parafin) with a jar of cianne peper, mix, pour into the tube and when hardened peel back the cardboard, like a crayon, and apply it to the prop shaft and strut.

Tom M. problem with option #1

The problem(s) with option #1 is that a) The plastic will pollute the water, b) You run the risk of sucking up the shredded plastic into your system. c) Nobody's going to get me into the water every time I shut down for the week. ;-)

barnacle protection

I have tried the bottom paint on the prop also but the long range result was not that good for me and I don't bother with it anymore. If you do that however, you need a good coat of Interlux 2000 or something between the prop and the bottom paint -- the copper in the paint is an unlike metal to the bronze prop and that equals electrolysis. Also, the multi-year bottom paints are ablative (vs the harder epoxy type) and the speed of the prop will ablate your paint off in no time. I just go down and scrape when my speed drops off in the summer. (Your hands will usually heal up in a week or two!)

prop growth

i replaced my 2 blade with 3 blade campbell river prop, they put a clear coated substance (looks like varnish) on the prop prior to shipping it to me, the stuff works so far, no growth after a year of use, north by north in b.c canada sold me the prop you might want to call them and find out what they use. as for putting a plastic bag on your prop when your done sailing......... ....ya right, and what have you been smoking :)

Shaft & Prop Conditioning

A frien told me that he uses a technique that a Prop repair shop said fishermen use (hear say - hear say). Since my shaft & prop were LOADED with barnicles last year when I hauled, I tried the technique on my Bronze shaft & prop. It is to repeatedly coat the shaft and Prop, while out of the water, with STP Gas Treatment (yes, I said STP Gas Treatment). When I dove in the water on the mooring in late August/early September, there were NO barnicles, only some brown fuzzy growth with I brushed off easily with my hand. I'll check again at haulout in a couple of weeks. This is only one data point. I don't know it it is because of the treatment, or if we had a low barnicle growth season in RI waters. Anybody know about the barnicle growth this season? It is certainly a cheap solution if it is really working. Regards, Dick C. S/V Puffin ('90H-33.5)

The truth will ring...

...in a few weeks when all of us "Northerners" have out boats hauled. It may be a good idea to resurrect this discussion again when our boats are hauled and maybe give a quantitative answer that we can all utilize next year. Got that Phil? Paul Akers S/V AKERS AWAY H37
