I'm new to the area, and would appreciate any info on interesting cruising spots, anchorages, restaurants, what have you, on Barnegat Bay. I'm now at Mariner's Marina in the town of Barnegat. Thanks for your help.

Great places to cruise on Barnegat

There are plenty of great places to cruise on Barnegat Bay. Be sure to get a copy of NOAA Chart # 12324. Cape Island Marina is close to you and has transient slips, a restaurat and a pool if you are staying overnight. Out near Barnegat Inlet is a nice anchorage and marina at High Bar Harbor. The most popular anchorage on the Bay is Tices Shoal (except in a west or SW wind). You can anchor, swim and party with the others. You can also walk to the beach on the other side of the island. There is a free pumpout boat on weekends. Forked River has several marinas with transient slips. I stay at Southwinds. It has a great restaurant and pool. Captain's Inn, a little further up the river has free slips during the day and $20 per night and you can eat at the restaurant or the Tiki bar. Berkely Park has a small anchorage but is shallow. Toms River has great sailing and several popular anchorages. You can dock at The Lobster Shanty for a meal - all the way up the river to Starboard, but not overnight. Another popular spot is Silver Bay at the northern. end of the Bay. Watch your depth until you know the waters better. The Bay is wide but not very deep. Many people also cruise down to locations on Long Beach Island and to Atlantic City. There are only a few marinas where you can stop for the night - moslty around Beach Haven, but call ahead. Be careful of straying out of the narrow channel. Local knowledge is key. Welcome to the Bay!!

Tices Shoal, Toms River & Forked River

The last post gave you great information. We keep our boat in Island Heights, Toms River. We love Tices Shoal for overnight. The 300 boats there during the day becomes about 5 boats at night. In Forked River, we stay at the State Marina at the end (at Route 9), then walk to the Forked River House for a great dinner. The Toms River has lots of great little coves for anchoring and swimming. So does the Metedeconk River, just north and west of Mantoloking Bridge.

In Barnegat

When you leave Marinas Marina (turning left onto the main road), just before the main intersection (route 9?) you will see a couple of stores. One is an old fashion ice cream shop. Have many nice memories of that place. I remember the owner playing the theme music of the "Adams family" & everyone would "knock" in unison. Great place for the family. Tices shoal was great - anchor & walk over to the atlantic side and go for a dip. Roger Hunter 37 (Formerly in Barnegat, now in Raritan Bay) Destiny
