I am in the final stages of planning my trip to NCY in May. I need to get information about Marinas in the Barnegat and Manasquan Inlets. I know that the tide could be 3-4 ft and swift currents so we would like to stay at a marina. What marinas will accommodate my 46' loa, 5.5 draft and 14' beam in the Barnegat and Manasquan Inlets - NJ? Thanks for your help, 46

I like

I like Clark's Landing 732-899-5559 http://www.jerseymarinas.com/ClarksLanding.htm or Hoffman's Marina-732-528-6160 Both are a 5 minute walks to restaurants. Hoffmans is also a 15 minute walk to the beach and boardwalk.

Options

If you put in at Barnegat Inlet, it can't be overstressed that you heed the winding channel. With 5.5 draft, any small deviation could have you bumping the shoals more often than you'd care to. Once inside, there is a fairly calm anchorage to port known locally as Meyer's Hole. (I'm not sure if it's marked as such on charts.) I've anchored there overnight several times, and the water is both suitably calm and more than deep enough for you. Or, once you follow the channel toward the mainland shore and reach the "BI" daymark, turn south and head for Mariner's Marina. I've never stayed there, but it's almost entirely a sailboat marina, and I'm sure they would have no problem accommodating a boat with your size needs. As for Manasquan, one option is the Brielle Yacht Club. I believe it's the second marina to starboard after passing the railroad bridge. Again, your boat's size shouldn't be an issue there. There's a good restaurant on premises (The Sand Bar). Just before the BYC is the Brielle Yacht Basin, which is OK to stay at in a pinch, but it's an overwhelmingly powerboat (i.e. fishing boat) crowd, so you'd have to deal with boaters firing up their noisy, smelly Johnsons in the pre-dawn hours to go find the fish. Good luck, and enjoy the trip. If you need crew, give me a shout. Pete s/v "Crossroads" (ODay 322) Little Silver, NJ

Manasquan is the better inlet

If you come in Barnegat the Marinas are an hour from the inlet (I don't know any closer). The Forked river has a few options encluding Farley State Marina and Silver Cloud Marina. The are both cheap and nice!

Barnegat

I assume that you will have a copy of NOAA Chart #12324. If you come in Barnegat inlet, ask for conditions ahead of time and follow a local. Just inside and to port is Meyers hole also know locally as High Bar Harbor with good anchoring and a yacht club/marina. Just to the north of the inlet (inside) you will probably have the best luck at finding a slip in Forked River. Along with the many marinas and yacht clubs, you can also stay overnight at Captn's Inn restaurant(just past marker 19) for about $20 and enjoy the food as well. There are usually overnight slips available there during the week, but fill up on weekends. The favorite local anchorage in the area is Tices Shoal, almost directly due east of Forked River. It is comfortable in all but west winds. The tidal range in this area of the bay is less than one foot and varies more with wind than tide. There is an article about Manasquan, New Jersey in the current issue of Offshore Magazine (see link) with information about most of the available local marinas and slips. The article is entitled "Savoring the Pepperoni Trail". Many cruisers also seem to find a favorable anchorage inside Manasquan just off the north side of the channel in the area of Gull Island. As mentiond already, the marinas and yacht clubs are just before and after the railroad bridge. The currents can be strong around that bridge. There are additional facilities and anchorages west of the Route 35 bridge on the way to the Pt. Pleasant canal. Just watch your depth as the water gets a little thin outside of the channel.

Avoid Barnegat

Manasquan is a much safer all weather inlet. Go straight in pass the CG station on the left and you'll see two marinas that can help you. The left one is better, If you follow the channel right (north) there is a good safe anchorage but you have to wait for a bridge opening to get in and out
