I have a 1984 222 with Barlow Winches that are hard to move. Does anyone know how to remove the chrome cover to access the winch interior? The winch center has a black plastic? cap that pushes down about 3/4 inch, but I can not see any hex socket or spring clamps that would help release the winch....Do I have to unbolt the winch from below? Also any advice on servicing or greasing would be helpful. Thanks, Larry

Dust Cap?

Could you be looking at a seal of some type? Barlows have a screw in the middle of the winch handle socket. Earlier winches have simple slot heads; later models have socket heads. I would see if it is possible to remove the piece you are poking at by prying it out - carefully. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Barlow winches

I need a part for the Barlow on the mast, it's a "15" and the plastic retaining ring at the outer edge is broken. Are replacements available?

Larry,

That is the retainer. Press on the center and as you are doing that pull up slowly on the winch drum. It should slide up but watch your springs and pawls. r.w.landau

Sounds good

Thanks alot, I will give it a try. Are these springs and pauls replaceable or do I just apply winch grease....

Winch maintenence

The body of the winch and the bearings ( I don't think that your Barlows have bearings) should be greased. The springs and pawls should be oiled. Winch maintenence should be done atleast once a season. If you grease the pawls and don't maintain them, the water and dirt gums up the grease and the pawls don't move and they stick in the retracted position. I have winches with 4 pawls. One pawls gummed up and quit working and put the rest of the pressure on the opposing pawl. This destroyed the other pawl pocket. I inherited this problem from the previous owner. I located two winches to match from a surplus store. They turned out to have the same problem. I don't think new springs or pawls are readily available for the Barlows. r.w.landau
