Re: my Barlow winch 19 on my Oday 28 Cabin top

This is probably a dumb question but the PDF of parts on these is kind of misleading. View PDF here: Barlow winch parts

My question is: were all Barlow 19 winches one speed? I have one on the cabin top of my 1986 Oday 28 for my main sheet, and (I know... NO eye rolling here) it seems to behave now like it has only one speed, but I swear it was a 2 speed winch! Hummm like what happened to it??

Better question might be were any Barlow 19 winches 2 speed?

I apologize if this seems like an odd question!

Will be tearing into it today or tomorrow... just fyi!

Any help is appreciated!

Probably a worn pawl(s) or broken pawl spring(s). You'll have to open it up and see.

I think the lewmar pawls and springs will work. Check with Lewmar.

A machine shop might be able to make you a new one....

I see they are pretty easy to get and I read that the Harken and Lewmar ones will work, just not understanding if they are ll the same size. West Marine has them and so does Amazon of all places!

Amazon has everything.... kind of scary.:yikes:

I got bored once and decided to try and search for the most random thing I could think of on Amazon... so I typed in "Harmonica Replacement Reeds".... and got multiple hits. Terrifying:eek: . Then I tried "tooth sharpener" and also got multiple hits... fortunately the sharpener was for chainsaw teeth and not human teeth. There is still some hope for humanity.

I have used the Lewmar springs and pawls in my Barient 22 and 23 winches. They work just fine. I understand the Barlow and Barient are similar.

I have seen Barlow 19’s identified as 2 speed and self tailing.
Here are a pair on EBay. *NEW* Pair Barlow #19 Two Speed Winches ~ Chrome-plated bronze | eBay

When you open them up it should be evident. If you have 2 separate sets of pawls then you have 2 speeds. Each set works under strain when you work the winch clock wise or counter clockwise.

@jssailem Thank you for all of that! I did know that the amount of pawls were the determining factor but are you saying that there will be 4 of them?

So you mean one pair = turn one way & second pair = turn other way? So 4 in total? I'm sure it will be evident here soon!

I'm getting ready to open it up here soon...

It is exciting. Careful not to loose bearings or permit pawls and springs to jump free.

Yep and so it seems.... I must be losing my mind! It's a one speed winch and it's still clean, oiled a greased up from the last time I took it apart! Omg what happens to how you perceive things over time! One set of perfecting working pawls...! Embarrassing that I thought it was a 2 speed :oops::oops:. Well check that off the list!!

I so appreciate all of your helpful and some fun comments too :)

I recently sold a pair of Barlow 19’s.

Mine were single-speed. I had someone inquire and apparently he had a Barlow 2-speed 19.

As far as pawls, Lewmar pawls will generally work. I think there are 2 sizes.
