I have a 2000, 311. with a Yanmar diesel. Yesterday I went out for a sail, all was fine until I was ready to return to port. the engine would not start. checked the usual fuel level, battery connections and they had plenty of juice, starter would click but that was it tapped the starter no results. Any ideas, replace starter? How much and is that something I could do myself? Thanks for the help.

Before you go and buy a new starter, check the wiring connections at the key switch, they could be loose, corroded, or both. There is a white wire in the circuit that is one of the usual suspects. However, if the starter is clicking, that could be the symptom of a weak solenoid. In any event if you have to replace a solenoid or a starter, its not that diffucult other that acceesibilty.

Check the connections on the starter posts. Doesn't take much current to click a solenoid. Check grounds also.
Also check that your starter battery has fluid and is ok. Mine would still read 12.6 volts until I put a load on it, then about 8.

Hey Barkley,

Had the same problem. This seems to be a common problem with the older Beneteau 30 footers. It has been addressed on this forum before with a couple of suggested solutions.

Here is a link to a long related thread:
http://forums.beneteau.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=111855&highlight=starter+relay

I just (last week) added a relay into my starter system to correct this issue. Now she starts every time.

I have attached a diagram I got from this forum.

PM if you want more info.

I have a 2003 B331 with a Westerbeke engine. Last summer the engine failed on 3 separate occasions. All due to the start system wiring breaking at the connectors. In the end I replaced 6 connectors. No problems since.

This is a real common problem for Beneteau owners with Yanmar power plants.

Yanmar supplies the wire loom along with the diesel. The wire that runs from the start button to the starter solenoid is undersized and just barely adequate (when new) to carry enough current to engage the solenoid and keep it engaged when the starter motor tries to turn over.

The fix posted by Cwoody is the most common repair.

We have a 2000 B321. Had the same problem about 6 years ago. Would start in the slip and was random whether I could get it to fire after sailing. We ran a new wire from the starter button directly to the solenoid and have not had the problem since. Another guy had the same boat and found some of the connectors may have had corrosion...
