BARIENT WINCH DIAGRAM?

The Barient winch on my starboard cabin top is starting to stiffen up on my 1986 222 O'Day. Would anyone have a breakdown on how these come apart? When I look down in the socket I see what appears to be a plastic cover that seems to be rather loose. Is there something under this cover that unscrews to allow the winch to come apart, Thanks to Joe from Dighton MA. I have the Barlow diagram and they come apart by inserting an allen wrench in the socket for the breakdown. If in fact this plastic cover can be removed, how do I remove it? The question of the day. Thank You in advance.

Winch Fiber

Chuck, You may want to check and find out if the fiber spool inside the Barient Winch was ever recalled back to the manufacturer. The spools on my Barlow winches were recalled in 1986 or 87 because they used an inferior material for the fiber, that caused it to expand when the weather got hot. The company was located in Connecticut and they sent me two free spools back then after I called them. I learned about it when I used to subscribe to an O'Day Owner's magazine back in the 80s and 90s. It's possible that Barient could have bought those fiber spools back then. Also, Check the winch capstan for a small hole on the outer edge that could be used to stick a nail into to keep it from turning while you unscrew the Allen bolt to take it apart. It may have something like that, but I'm not sure. Smooth sailing! Joe from the East Coast

If i remember right ...

you poke your finger through the plastic flap and it releases the drum. But then it may have been something I was smoking. Vic "Seven"

Had a similar problem

A few years ago I had a similar problem. Not sure of the exact type of winch I have on my O'Day 23 but I looked for and made electronic copies of a couple of Barient/Barlow winch manuals. One winch was very tight and it was difficult to rotate the drum. The other was stiff and intermittent and sometimes froze. The boat is a 1982 and I am the 3rd owner. I cannot attach a file here so e-mail me at jaforster@yahoo.com and I will send you the 2 acrobat files I have. When I disassembled my winch I found a black plastic core/spool which the chrome plated drum rode on. I do not know the type of plastic. I inspected and cleaned everything and it appeared that there was some interference between the drum and the plastic which made turning the winch difficult ..... so I took a length of 400 grit paper and sanded the plastic until the drum fit and rotated freely. The sanding was done with a long length of 400 grit paper which I wrapped around the body of the plastic core and pulled back and forth while moving up and down ..... much like you would sand a chair spindle. After a couple of minutes of sanding and testing the fit with the drum the winch rotated easily. Since then I have not had any problems. Both winches rotate easily and work perfectly. Not sure if this is the problem you are encountering but if the construction is the same this is a simple solution. You might ask why this problem occurs ..... I believe a PO may have lubricated the drum - Plastics do absorb moisture and other liquids and this can change the dimensions - not much but when sliding is involved then a small increase in dimensions can cause interference. Removing a small amount of the material eliminated this interference. Hope this helps James O'Day 23 Bullock's Cove RI
