After a lot of agonizing, I have finally made a decision, we went with a Magma gas grill. The choice was not easy, the original thought was to buy a Force 10 log style grill. I have used a barrel style grill at home for many years, and thought that a similar style would work on the boat also. Following a close inspection of several models at the local West Marine, the standard size Magma won out. It liked the fact that it could be used as single burner stove as well as a Bar B Que. One final question remains, Where have you mounted your Magma Grill on a Hunter 26? I have tried a few locations and none seem right. Either the grill sits in the way, at the boarding ladder entrance or is atop the motor. The mounting hardware says to install on a vertical rail. Has anyone found a better way to mount, horizontal, or diagonal? What is the most convient location that still remains out of the way? Please help a culinary challanged sailor find the answer. TIA, JSetser

Bar Be Que Location

Like yourself I agonized where to put the beast so it would be out of the way and look good. Finally decided to buy legs for grill. When not in use the legs come off and we store it up forward in the bow compartment. When we want to cook we put the legs back on and set it up near the ridge on the rear deck where your table would set up. Paul H S/V Linda Belle 95 H26

260 stern rail

We bought the Magma and mount it horizontally on the stern rail near the center. It is clear of the motor and clear of the ladder. Only problem is the grease tends to drip on the white rudder plate/bracket. We just wipe it off. Works for us. This is on a 260 so I don't know if yours is the same.

Hi Bill and Nancy, Have you had any problems with the mount on your grill slipping? How well does it hold when mounted to a horizontal rail, as compared to a vertical one? This appears to be a problem with few clear solutions. I really don't want to have dinner almost ready only to watch it slip into the bay. Thanks for the input, I'll give the horizontal a try. J. Mine...

…is mounted above the outboard, but swung inward somewhat (so it’s just inside the aft rail). Did you know that the squatty 11 lb propane bottle will fit in the well just in front of the engine on a H26. You can’t get the tank in and out without removing the outboard, but one filling will last you at least a season. I haul my H26 in the winter and remove the motor anyway, and refill before launching. Sure beats the disposal bottles. It’s a good location in the sense that it’s open and vented at the bottom. Now, having 11 lbs of propane next to the engine and fuel tank!!! Well, you might as well go quick.

I just bought one !

I have a Hunter 212 and mount the grill near the bow of the boat on a vertical rail. This allows me to sit on top of the cabin and do the grilling. I really like the fact that I spend an extra $17 on a mount extension. This really gets it away from the boat, but I can still easily reach it. And when not in use I can loosen the mount and swing the grill closer to the boat and cover it with the Magma cover. I also purchased a gas locker bag that hangs off a horizonal rail away from the grill. Works fine !

Grill and the Jib

Jesse: Does the grill on the bow rub against the jib? Could you post a picture? Mark

Grill and the Jib

Sorry, I can't supply a picture for now. But as I said, when the grill is not in use I move it in closer to the railing and put a cover on it. But not very much of it would be inside the railing. And since I have a small jib, and not a Genny, it probably won't rub up against it very much. And even if it does rub a little, the grill has a cover on it. Now, this is all in theory since I haven't yet tried it out. So, wish me luck!

Horizontal mount

We bought a special bracket that Magma sold to use on the horizontal rail. When you cinch it down tight it does not slip. Haven't lost a steak yet.
