Banging and Clanging

I've tightened down both the main and jib halyards and there is still a banging and clanging coming from inside my mast when my boat rocks side to side. I see 3 wires, 2 black, 1 white, coming out of the mast near the deck. I've pulled these wires somewhat tight and still hear the noise inside the mast. I'm afraid of pulling these wires too tight as they may break, but believe these are the culprits. I think they go to my VHF antenna and mast mounted lights. The noise doesn't bother me while I'm sailing, but I bet it'll drive me crazy the first night I try to spend on board. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

mast sounds

Yes, leave the wire it sounds like the mast lighting. The sound is likely to be a hallyard, My mast does the same thing, I have noticed with mine to let the hallyard have some slack has seemed to help a time or two and also have tried to tie them off tight to the cleat and with a bungee cord from hallyard to one of the stays has helped on the exterior of mast. Furthermore mine seems to have a sound like cars going by on a distant freeway with a hum to it . I thought that might be exactly what I was hearing but it turned out that if docked at the exact right angle to the wind that the wind does this. One can only hear it from the inside the hull inside the boat. My halyards clang when they are cleated off tight too, even if they are tight it only takes a tiny little space for them to tap on the mast inside. A question? do you hear this same noise with the sails raised and hallyard tight? If you do thenI would guess wires, otherwise, hallyards. If you find a way to eliminate this please let us know too. Good luck and good sails.

Mast Slap

Glenn It will drive you crazy. On our boat there is a plastic conduit that runs up inside the mast. Turns out that only one of the four wires had not been put in the conduit. When the mast was down when rerigging last year, we had the errant wire put in the conduit, noise, blessedly, stopped. Check to see if you have a conduit, and use it. If not, many people have tried big wire ties or stuffing insulation inside the mast. See if the factory knows if there should be a conduit inside. Try mast slap or mast wiring in the archives. Good luck. Stu

Here is what we did -

We had that clanking inside the mast when sailing in choppy conditions. It was determined that the wires inside the mast were bouncing back and forth. Before we stepped the mast this year, we removed the two screws holding the steaming light - and injected some expandable foam through the holes into the interior of the mast. You know - the kind that you buy in an aerosol can for touching up your home insulation? Guess what? It works perfectly. Cheers,

zip ties...

We used zip ties to silence the mast wires on our H260 - check the archives for "zip ties".

If you decide to sleep aboard before you implement one of the suggested solutions, just play some of your favorite music. If your mast is deck stepped you won't hear a thing. If it's keel stepped, that's another story.

Zip ties

Three Zip ties fastened in a triangular shape every 12 inches. Do this by undoing the wire at the mast head light and drawing out at the base having first attached a draw line. Zip on the ties and your noice will stop for ever.

Scrubbies

A while back this came up and one suggestion was to run the wire through a couple of those plastic scubbie things you use to scub pans. They are dirt cheap at the grocery store and, according to several posters, works very well.

Zip scrubbies

I spaced the scrubbies with a small dacron line, but I am wondering if running the three zip ties thru them would keep them placed more elegantly on the wires.

doesnt matter how tight you get the wires..

they still goin to clang and bang unless you have some way of stoppin em from bouncing around inside

Guarantee

Yep Zip ties three in a group in a triangle shape "WILL WORK PERFECTLY" Not keen on the idea of scrubbies (with respect) cos eventually they will drop to the base of the mast. Moisture etc etc etc.

Scrubbies

Mark, Clearly you don't know anything about scrubbies. If you did you would know that, if anything, they will slide to the top of the mast, what with Australia being upside down and all. :) Sorry I just COULDN"T resist that one. ron
