MD-CHESAPEAKE BAY-BALTIMORE HARBOR – MARITIME FESTIVAL
Mariners are advised the Port of Baltimore will be hosting the Star Spangled Sailabration 2012, an international maritime festival that will launchMaryland's three-year War of 1812 bicentennial efforts, from June 13, 2012 until June 19, 2012. This event will bring dozens of Navy vesselsand tall ships from the United States and international navies to the port. In addition to a parade of sail and fireworks, an air show featuring a demonstration from the U.S. Navy Blue Angels is planned to be held in the vicinity of Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, which
temporarily will close portions of the main navigation channels. It is anticipated the increased activity associated with this festival will result in some disruption in and potential delays to normal port operations. All entities conducting business in the port, including, but not limited to shipping lines, port operators, and vessel agents should plan accordingly. Specific details on Coast Guard established safety zones and other waterway closures resulting from planned festival activities will be provided in future Local Notice to Mariners publications. For more information concerning the schedule of planned events, please visit the Star Spangled 200 website at: http://www.starspangled200.com/events_list .

This sounds neat. I might have to prevail on my brother and sister-in-law in Columbia, MD for a room then. Heaven forbid I should spring for a hotel room!

I hope, Warren, you'll keep us up to date on this one? And SBO doings related to it? Funny, I had to drive into the City (New York, that is) this morning and noticed a Maryland War of 1812 License plate. Now I guess I know what that was about.

IF you could get one. My sailing club got the last slip at Anchorage Marina for the weekend. Of course, there are others, but they may all be booked by now.

I hope, Warren, you'll keep us up to date on this one?
He gave you the web site.

Marc, If you have political opinions, please keep them to yourself.
Johnny Cash song from years ago.
Edit to add: this is a fine forum and we must preserve it and not end up like this:

The One On The Right Is On The Left"

There once was a musical troupe
A pickin' singin' folk group
They sang the mountain ballads
And the folk songs of our land

They were long on musical ability
Folks thought they would go far
But political incompatibility led to their downfall

Well, the one on the right was on the left
And the one in the middle was on the right
And the one on the left was in the middle
And the guy in the rear was a Methodist

This musical aggregation toured the entire nation
Singing the traditional ballads
And the folk songs of our land
They performed with great virtuosity
And soon they were the rage
But political animosity prevailed upon the stage

Well, the one on the right was on the left
And the one in the middle was on the right
And the one on the left was in the middle
And the guy in the rear burned his driver's license

Well the curtain had ascended
A hush fell on the crowd
As thousands there were gathered to hear The folk songs of our land
But they took their politics seriously
And that night at the concert hall
As the audience watched deliriously
They had a free-for-all

Well, the one on the right was on the bottom
And the one in the middle was on the top
And the one on the left got a broken arm
And the guy in the rear, said, "Oh dear"

Now this should be a lesson if you plan to start a folk group
Don't go mixin' politics with the folk songs of our land
Just work on harmony and diction
Play your banjo well
And if you have political convictions keep them to yourself

Now, the one on the left works in a bank
And the one in the middle drives a truck
The one on the right's an all-night deejay
And the guy in the rear got drafted

Then don't go or don't listen. You aren't expected to attend and cheer or Boo. Some like it hot and some like it cold.

The following link is for the Norfolk area OpSail events page http://www.opsail2012virginia.com/ that is held in along with the Norfolk Harborfest. Seems like they have a bit more specific events information posted at this point on their site. Looking forward to watching the Parade of Sail on 13 and 19 June

The Op Sail fleet leaves Norfolk on 12 June and arrives at Baltimore road on 13 June. My guess is that if you roll out early on 13 June you will see the flotilla coming by Anne Arundel County. Display The Flag if you have one (leave the cute pirate stuff ashore).

Them guys know how to throw a party. A few years ago sailed into Baltimore Harbor and got the show of a ship being decomissioned with the fire and rescue harbor boats shooting their hoses up in the air.

The Capital listed the following website for volunteers for the international parade of tall ships in the Baltimore Harbor June 14-19. www.starspangled200.com/volunteering. They have slots for leading tours of the tall ships and being liaisons to the visiting ships as well as helping guide the visitors, beer garden and party support. You get to choose your activities and dates. It's always fun to get "up close and personal".
