I have a 1994 Hunter H26. There is a soft spot to the port side of the mast tabernacle. Is there balsa or other wood under the fiberglass that could be causing this? Thanks.

There is supposedly no wood in the deck of the water ballasted Hunters, only foam and aluminum backing plates. There was, however, in my 1993 boat, in the area near the mast base near the electrical connector, a small 1"x1" square of plywood backing up the halyard sheaves. There was also an air gap between the deck skin and the cabin ceiling skin.

@SkookumZac is correct that there was no balsacore in either the deck nor the hull. There are aluminum plates encapsulated in the fiberglass. There is a foam sandwich encapsulated in the fiberglass as it compresses when in contact with resin giving strength with less weight. As for the ceiling liner, it was held in place with marine putty in places; thus the air voids. Not sure about the wood though
