Ballast maintenance

What are the maintenance recommendations for the ballast on a 23.5 that will be in a slip until fall? I find references to using Clorox and pellets of some sort, but not quantity or how often. Also, is there a reason to open the valve once the ballast is full?

I open valve one a month in slip as you will loose a little water if seal is worn.I,m on Lake Michigan fresh water so at the end of season I will add a bag on pool chlorine on last sail and the dump at pullout. You being in salt water might be different.

I live in Pensacola, FL and have had my 23.5 at a slip for 3 years as of this summer. I've pulled it twice in that time (once for a storm that ended up being nothing and last summer to repaint the bottom). I have never added anything to my ballast tank. I let it fill with the salt water in Pensacola Bay and close it off. The Marine science I know (which granted isn't a lot, but Google is often my friend) seems to indicate that without light (or hot water vents at significant depths) very little will grow in a marine environment. I have never had any issues with a smell in the cabin and when I pulled her last summer the water drained quickly which seemed to me to indicate there was not significant growth inside that was restricting the opening to the tank.

I hope this helps. I've seen the same posts you have about adding bleach or using chlorine tabs. Personally, I have not seen the need, and it seems to me that the chlorine would damage the seal to your tank and harm the environment when you drop your ballast, IMHO.

Yeah, thanks. Was worried about dumping chlorox into the Estuary. Does not seem good. Tho in the Oakland Estuary, it might be cleanest thing dumped there in a while. But This is why I was asking about dose and frequency. I am going with your suggestion tho. Let it go.

sorry to difuse some thinking here but small organisms due grow in the water without light or oxygen. Think of the water at deep depths with marine growth. Without treatment, you open up the ballast tank air vent, you will be running out of the boat so fast you will think twice. Yes add a little about a cup of chorox and your crew will be happy not to mention the better half who will not use the rolling pin.

I can do a cup. What the hell. I've had the boat in the water one week now. I noticed yesterday that the two blades on the prop that are still in the water, already have crud growing on them.

For what it's worth, I went down to my boat today and pulled the plug on the ballast tank because I was made more curious. It's been sealed up since June of last year when I put her back in the water after the bottom job. I could see the water level just two or three inches beneath the hole. I put my nose right up to the opening and inhaled deeply. The smell that hit me was slightly musty, if anything at all.... But not rancid or like dying organisms in any way. I could easily have stayed in the cabin with the plug removed and the cabin totally close up and been fine indefinitely. Adding bleach probably doesn't hurt anything (and perhaps using some would do away with the slight musty scent) but my personal experience is that it is not necessary for me, in my waters along the Gulf Coast.

It depends where the boat has been. However, every time I opened that drain bale plug where air enters, it ran me out with the smell due to no treatment

Adana, Crazy Dave is right about it depends on where you filled your ballast. Most of the time when I was in the Pensacola area, I had the same experience as yours. Once, however I filled my ballast in the north end of Bayou Chico and a month later..... PHEEEEW! BrianW
