I am considering a new 306 and in researching the keel weight and ballast. I thought I would look up the specs on the Catalina 30 for comparison. There is a large disprepency in these boats and I wonder if someone could enlighten me. The 306 lists 2,550lbs for ballast while the Catalina 30 lists 4,200lbs. The 306 lists 7,150lbs for displacement while the Catalina lists 10,200lbs for weight (I assume weight overall not dispplacement). The Catalina carries 446 sqft and the 306 carries 400 sqft. Why does the Catalina carry so much more keel weight. Is the 306 stability compromised?

Comparison

You might want to log on to a site called sailcalc. It contains a comparison of most of the popular sailboats available today. Good luck.

Clink on the link. It's Carl Adler's web page with with his sailing calculations for different sailboats he compiled into his own database. Fair Winds, Clyde

Two different boats

The specifications of the Catalina 30 MKIII show her to be a cruiser. The higher displacement and overhangs will give her a kindlier motion in a seaway, while making her slower to accelerate, and unlikely to plane down the waves on a run. Her capsize ratio of 1.93 gives her marginal qualification as an offshore design. Since weight costs money, she is probably more expensive. The Hunter 306, on the other hand shows leans toward speed and acceleration in coastal waters. The longer length at the waterline means higher hull speed, the Sail Area to Displacement of 17.3 means faster acceleration in a puff, and the Displacement/Length of 164 means she will plane more often. On the other hand, her ride will be less comfortable, and her 2.16 capsize screen means she should stay within a day sail of safe harbor (where most of us spend 99 percent of our time.) I think thgey are both excellent boats - what are you looking for? David Lady Lillie

Cruising Boat?

We are currently sailing a 260 on Lake Michigan. We have been sailing up and down the coast on the Michigan side for 3 years now and have decided to head across to Wisconsin and a bit further north. I've been across on a friends Freedom 30' before but my wife hasn't been offshore more than 6 or 7 miles yet. I want her first experience to be a good one or it may well be my last. She loves the 306 so I'm looking hard at buying one. I sailed a 290 a couple years ago in some pretty big waves and it seems like a solid boat. We live on the 260 every weekend and take our vacations onboard. The 306 has some nice amenities for it's size. I wasn't real fond of the roll furl main and have declined that option. Any input would be appreciated.
