This cruiser's rally was originally organized by the Latitude 38 folks up in the SF bay area at least 15 years ago and has become a very popular fall ritual. http://www.baja-haha.com/

The return trip north is sarcastically called the "Baja Bash"... and there's no party.

Contrary to popular opinion

...there are other ways back up the coast. Cruising World had an article in 2004 called the "Baja Dash" where you sail up the coast and anchor out almost every night. Except for the first 150 miles out of Cabo, anchorages are within a day sail away from each other. Most people claim they don't have the time, but why they'd choose to bash instead of taking it easy is beyond me. Delivery skippers need to do the bash, cruisers shouldn't have to.

I gave a copy of the article to our friends who are doing the HaHa this year.

When you are done with Cabo, come to Ixtapa & Z town. Very nice and one hell of a lot cheaper than Cabo.

I am sitting by the pool in Z Town as I write this. It is a little humid, but this is one tropical paradise. Much lower keyed than Cabo too!

La Paz and San Carlos are full of stranded sailboats whose owners flew home but the boats stay behind waiting, and waiting...For a price, there are delivery skippers who beat them back up the coast..But in today's market, many are not worth the effort..

There is also the "clipper route".
Leaving Cabo headed south-west on a reach starboard tack, on this tack for about 8 days cracking upwind gradually as you go. 600-800 miles out (about the latitude of the US/Mexico boarder) come about to port tack and another 600-800 miles back to California should put you close to San Francisco.

the clipper route is much mor ecomfortable than is the bash route..especially this year --with el nino being the storm producing bad boy he is--seas are 30 ft near shore---need to watch weather very seriously ....
