for Mummah. Roger has written about this extensively. His book can be bought online and if very interesting and, I suspect, helpful. Plan to use it myself in the near future.

Avoid an "N" in the wind direction

Rudy, you didn't say were you are coming from but your address is Islamorada so I'll assume your in the keys. Main thing is to avoid Northern winds. The kick up against the northbound gulf stream and make nasty steep waves. You want an "S" in the wind direction. Second thing is the current, runs around 2.5 knots northbound so you have to calculate that into your navigation. I usually aim for a heading that would put me about 20m south of my destination (Bimini). Acutally coming from the Keys (I'm in Miami) is better because you can head east and ride the stream up. When you get to the Bahamas, fly a yellow quarantine flag until you clear customs, then fly the Bahamian courtesy flag. They will charge you $100 to clear customs and imigration, and includes a fishing license. It's a nice sail you can make in a day, its abour 45mi from Miami to Bimini.

Weather, Charts and Guides

I have left from Rodriguez Key, by Key Largo, in the wee hours to use the Stream to hit Bimini by early afternoon. If you are going further in, like to Chubb Key, you don't have to clear customs until you make land fall. Roger and Susie Mummah's book will be helpful as will charts and cruising guides. Watch the weather, North winds make the Stream ugly. Northers can make anchorages uncomfortable in the Bahamas. In Nassau you will find the cheapest rum and cokes anywhere. Liquor store have tasting tables with a large variety of rums to taste. They sell cans of coke for less than a buck. Add your favorite rum to your coke and walk the town til you are ready for another.

not in a northerly

Simple, if the wind is from ANY northerly quadrant than wait. The stream is angry with a north wind. This time of year it may take a while to get that window.
