When I bought my boat (1980 37C) in Sept. 2006, The throttle increased speed when pulled aft, shut down the engine when pushed forward. Being a sailor, not a power boater, and as this was my first big boat, I didn't consider notice this as a problem. Other sailors noted it immediately. The boat was on the hard for 2007 and now the boat is essentially new to me. My question is was this the standard throttle setup for the 1980 37C? Or did a PO mess it up? I plan on trying to figure out how to reverse the response before launch this year. Thanks, Jim B. s/v Leben ist gut

throttle cable rerouted

The boat's throttle runs in the opposite direction from mine. Forward should increase engine speed and backward decrease speed or stop. Check the linkage inside the pedestal. It sounds like someone took the throttle cable linkage apart - likely to replace the cable and then put it back-on backwards. It should be easy to make the correction by redoing the connection, if you so choose. My cable attaches to the front of the throttle lever inside the pedestal. I would guess yours is attached to the back. The fix should be easy just open it up and take a look :)

H37C throttle.

Mine was(and is) as Paul describes. After I installed the new engine in my 1979 H37C a quick connection to the engine throttle(injector pump) yielded the same result, forward is faster. But when you make the change be sure to check to see if pulling the throttle all the way back shuts the engine down. With my original 2QM20 that was the only way to shut down the engine. Unfortunately this can occur at inopportune times like when trying to get into reverse at the dock. Maybe you have a different setup with a fuel shutoff. Or can find a kit.

My throttle does this too.

"With my original 2QM20 that was the only way to shut down the engine. Unfortunately this can occur at inopportune times like when trying to get into reverse at the dock." On my Hunter 33' (2qm-15) the throttle also shuts off the motor when pulled back. A silly set up IMHO with lots of potential to cause an accident on the way back to the slip. However, the motor does have a compression release lever set-up on top of the motor, but no connection to it (and it looks like there never was a connection from the pristine condition of the attachment points). Additionally the throttle appears to have a limiting screw where the cable connects to the engine. Thus, eventually I plan to add a pull/cable system to utilize the compression release for shutting down the motor, and adjusting the throttle limit screw if possible (or welding something to it if necc.) so that pulling the throttle lever all the way back puts her in idle. WHY was this not done originally?!? A VERY silly oversight on an otherwise fabulous boat.

Backward is faster

The throttle on my '80 H37C is the same. Pull back to increase speed. Push forward to slow down or stop motor. I have the 3QM30 motor.
