Backup outboard

Last year, I had trouble with my A4 that turned out to be a gas line pinhole after weeks of looking elsewhere. Motorheads who have seen my rebuilt 77 engine tell me I should not let the experience rob me of confidence in my very nicely restored boat. But after being towed three times into Toronto's Bluffer's Park marina, where towing help is not an immediate given (sad, but true), I have played with the idea of getting a backup outboard large enough to push my boat, The Busted Flush, from an aft mount (hoping for a knot or two). The ideal situation would be to also use the outboard on my 8-foot dink. Using the mount to lower and raise the engine to the dink seems like a good plan to me, even if I have to drill my boat. But I figure the best outboard for a mounted backup would probably be a 6-plus hp longshaft, and that's not ideal as the primary power for my dink. Anyone use a stern mounted outboard to push a Catalina 30? Would a low-hp short shaft work in calm water? Would I be able to start it? I've been advised to carry a smaller outboard on my rail for the dink and simply push or pull my boat if stuck. Not sold on that idea. Anyone ever successfully move a Catalina 30 with a dink and a low hp outboard?

I've moved a bigger boat than that apporximately 10 nautical miles with a 4hp engine on an inflatable. The trick is to tie the dinghy fore and aft securely to the sailboat's stern quarter like a tug instead of towing or pushing from the stern. It does not work particularly well in stiff winds or chop, but it works.

Just happens that the impellor on my 270 exploded in the dark, windless, rain last night as I was entering the marina. Made it to the emergency dock and wondering how to make the last .5 mile to my slip I put my 2 HP Honda on the partially lowered swim ladder. Dead still with only a little throttle ( it wouldn't take too much ) and angled too far down, the boat got up over 2 Kts., it took a lttle to get it moving but surprised me.

thanks

OK. I'll probably sail with a 4 or 6 hp for dink on the rail this season and hope A4 treats me well

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
That is the huge advantage of having the outboard for the dink. I had a Uncle that use to cruise a Catalina 27 all over the place. His outboard on the boat went out so he used his 2.5 hp outboard to push his Catalina 27 to a slip.
