backstay

I want to know if I loosen the turnbuckle on the backstay only to replace it, is there a possibility of the mast coming down ?

Nope

I have a 1973C-22 and the backstay can be disconnected without fear of the mast coming down.Please be sure that the forestay is attached.I raise and lower the mast often all with out the backstay attached.

Shrouds

Tim is right. People with adjustable backstays have them loose and the mast will not fall forward. Just make sure you have the shrouds fastened and tight.
