backstay tension

I’ve got an older model Catalina 22 with stainless steel rigging and while I can’t be sure of it, I think the backstay has stretched a bit. I no longer have enough barrel length on my turnbuckle to adequately tension the backstay. Is this something that could be fixed by installing a turnbuckle with a longer barrel length or do I need to re-swage the backstay a few tenths of an inch shorter? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me. Jeff

change it out

If indeed it is stretched, it may be headed for a failure, likely when you are oversailed in nasty weather. Suggest you call CatalinaDirect and get a new one. The other possibility is to check the rake of your mast to be sure it isn't simply over-raked aft.

Rig

I recently sprang for the whole standing rigging kit from CatDirect. I'm very pleased. Change the backstay at least. It's a safety issue, not a performance one.

Replacing Rigging

Jeff - anything worn or stretched out, replace it. Take a look at the turnbuckles too - they crack. Dan - I am looking at replacing all of my standing rigging as well - I think it is the original (1979). One of many rennovations. How did it go for you? Any lessons learned? Scott

Did you check the forestay?

It's possible your forestay has gotten lose as the original Catalina turnbuckle tubes are only secured with nuts that can come loose as opposed to the more secure cotter pins used in open turnbuckles. I also used Catalina Direct's rigging kit for both shrouds and stays. They even include new turnbuckles with t-bar toggles and cotter pins. A truley excellent deal for the price. In fact I think you'd have to have an uncle in the rigging business to get a better deal. Also, has your spreader bracket been updated? I am not sure when that change was intrduced but it may have been before 1979 in which case you'd be ok. Catalina Direct can tell you.

Pretty smooth, Scott

Me and two mates changed them out at the dock. We worked slowly, and it took about three hours. The only mistake was on CD's part. They sent one toggle that was threaded the wrong way, so the new turnbuckle wouldn't accept it. I just used the best toggle from the old rig and it's fine. The improvement was dramatic. It is a good deal.

Check the base of the mast

I would check that the deck has not been crushed in. I had this and had to redo this area, not a big job, but very necessary. Also check the compreshion post that it did not crush the top of the keel trunk inside. I do not think that ss would give that much without breaking.

new rigging -- which backstay

When you replaced your rigging which backstay from CD did you install?

I went with the cheap one.

I don't race too seriously, so I didn't get the adjustable for cost reasons. I think it is an enhancement to have one, though.
