A racing friend is encouraging me to install a backstay adjuster on my 1994 400 Oceanis, which I do race in some distance events. Is the mast (orig. aluminum) bendable? Any recommendations? Thanks.

Hi There

If its like my 400 its masthead rig and the backstays alone will not give you much bend as they are just tensioning the forestay. The forward lower stays will bend the mast. I have a little bit of bend in mine as I believe it is stronger this way and keeps it from going inverted. The other issue is that if you have in mast furling this will not work very well with a lot of bend. This is just my 2.5 cent worth and hope it helps. I just bought my 400 in 2006 so Im no expert yet. Had a Dufour 2800 last and fitted a babystay to bend the mast. It was not in mast furling. It improved the pointing ability of the boat and gave the main a much better shape. Looking forward to hear from the experts on the subject. Charlie,

mast bend

the mast of the oc400 is not meant to be bent. if it was the builder would have included a backstay adjuster on both backstays.
