I am interested in adding a backstay adjuster to my '85 Hunter 31. Anyone have advice on where to buy the hardware? Will I need more than a 4-part tackle to handle the load? I'm thinking of attaching the tackle to the toe rail to avoid adding a padeye. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Tom Madura "Good Vices"

tensioner

West Marine sells a backstay tensioner. The loads on the tackle are not that great, since the rig works by squeezing the split backstay wire together to tension. My rig is shackled to the pad eye of the backstay, and it works fine.

Same as Steve's

Mine is the same setup. I recommend attaching it to the back stay attach points, mostly because it's a cleaner setup. The loads are very light. In San Francisco, our tensioner really helps the performance when the wind cranks up.

Only thing to watch out for is 'split wire'

construction. If you have 19-1 wire be sure to use the four wheeled model. Otherwise the wire is subject to work induced failure. BTW I have one that I took off of my H34. I went with hydraulics (only because of the bimini). Maybe we can cut a deal?

Pinching not so good

On my 28.5 the split backstay pinched togather for me was not a good option. Driving the boat stearing from the rail the backstay is in my way. With the pincher I would think it would be even worse. I went with a 16-1 cascade system that I bought from Lay-line. It works great, as you know on Lake Erie somedays you would need the 16-1 purchase. I also replace the backstay with some high teck line to reduce weight. With the sail area you have cranking on the backstay with just a 4 - 1 system you might as well not even put one on. Purchase is what you need to tighten the headstay. Cliff H 28.5 "Red Dog'
