Back Pressure on Head

The last time I pumped out my crew had a good laugh as the "honey" in the holding tank produced a geyser that soaked me head to toe. In diagnosing the problem, we found that pumping the head produced a back pressure that pushed up the pump handle. I think the vent must be blocked, but I'm not sure. If it is the vent, how do I unblock it? Thanks for the advice. Rob

The vent is definitely blocked...

And if you keep using the toilet or try to pump out again till you clear it, you could very well end up with a cracked holding tank. You're just lucky that it hasn't already happened. The two most likely places for a vent clog are the thru-hull and the connection on the tank. Take a screwdriver to the thru-hull and scrape it out...remove the vent line from the tank--AFTER you've relieved the pressure by opening the pumpout fitting cap!!!--and clear any waste buildup in the hose and tank fitting. And in the future, keep the vent line clear by backflushing it with water each time you pump out and/or wash your boat. I also suggest you check out the link below for information about how to maintain your toilet, tank and vent properly.
