Peggie or anyone else reading this on a holiday weekend.
I have a raritan phII, manual head that is about one year old and only gets weekend use. There seems to be something causing back pressure on the exhaust line. I know the thru hull fitting is clear and we no solids have been put thru for several months now. The resistance gos away when all the liquid has been cleared. the head is fuctionable but something is not right. Any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks for any help

Howard, do you have a holding tank? or is it pumping overboard directly? if holding tank, most likely cause is a plugged air vent for the tank, the small hose from the tank to an above water thru hill vent.. If not that, then the top side of the pump, the water inlet side, is not venting . you may have a slight vacuum on the top side of the piston (sea water side) when you try to pump the bowl out, it acts like there is back pressure on the discharge, bottom, side..
Good Luck

If you're 100% certain that it's not a blocked tank vent...

And to be 100% certain means that you've checked the vent thru-hull AND the vent line connection to the tank--both the tank vent fitting and that end of the vent line....and I'm betting you haven't checked that end.

But if you have, it's most likely that the air valve in the toilet needs cleaning.

The air valve is on the front of the pump housing...a little square nut with a hole in it that looks like it's a molded part of the pump, but is actually a piece that's threaded into it. Remove it and clean it...wrap the threads with teflon tape to put it back.

Sorry for no reply from me I was out of touch.. I didnt know about the air valve so i checked that and it seemed OK. I removed the hose from the Y-valve and ran a snake down and out thru the thru hull, then poured it full of viniger and let it sit overnight. After all that is is working again.
Thanks for your help.
