I have a raritan head that when pumped either in the wet or the dry mode develops a pressure down stream that causes the joker valve to turn inside out and nothing goes anywhere. i have put a rebuild kit in the head with a new joker and new gaskets and new plunger seals and the valve with the metal flap, I took the hoses apart and ran a old piece of garden hose through the down stream sewer hose and found no blockage in the line. when checking the high water loop i found that the vaccum breaker valve which is 1/4 inch and 1 psi valve was clogged and was cleaned and works but have not tried it for i took it home to work on it.i am not sure that had any thing to do with the problem for it worked till just a week and a half ago then now won't flush. need help with a rather smelly problem thanks terry adams 462 Morgan ketch hull #2

Blocked tank vent is the first thing to check

That can pressurize a tank enough to create enough back pressure to turn a joker valve inside out, or even burst the tank. However, if it didn't erupt all over the head when you removed the discharge hose from the toilet to rebuild it, that's prob'ly not your problem...UNLESS the boat sat long enough first for the pressure to escape through the toilet. If your toilet is original to the boat, it's most likely the original PH...the PH II replaced the PH in August of 1981. How to tell: the "dry/flush" knob on the PH is metal...it's plastic on the PH II. So if you tried to rebuild a PH using a PH II kit, that could cause problems, 'cuz only some of the parts fit. There are also a couple of balls in the intake that can create backpressure...a clogged or failed air valve can do it...but neither will turn a joker valve inside out. For that to happen, something has to be pushing back VERY hard from downstream of the whole toilet. So check your tank vent for a blockage...the two most likely places are the vent thru-hull and the connection to the tank--both the fitting and that end of the vent line. If you don't find a blockage, give Vic Willman at Raritan a call: 800-352-5630 x 6.
