Hi Guys and Gals!

Thanks again for all of the help. At the end of June, we noticed a leak between the engine block and the head. Based on all the fine advice, we decided to tear the engine down to the block ourselves. The head gasket was blown so it was replaced along with every other gasket that was removed during the process.

The head was disassembled, both exhaust valves replaced, all seals replaced, resurfaced, and pressure checked. She got new injectors, thermostat, zincs, and impeller. Surfaces were primed and painted and we finally figured out which cylinder was #1 so the proper valve lash could be adjusted. Her mixing elbow was also scraped clean. Since we wanted to make sure that the loss of power could not be attributed to anything else her bottom was throughly cleaned as well as her prop and shaft.

Last Wednesday we bled the fuel system and she fired right up for us! The engine seemed louder than we expected however, we discovered during the bleed process what we had suspected for awhile. She had only been running on one cylinder. She was run for an hour with no problems and did not appear to have any change in oil consistency.

This Tuesday we sea trialed her. Although the current was stronger than usual, when running with the current we observed 6.1 knots at 50 % power. 6.5 at 80 % and 6.9 at 100%. The only smoke was at 100% and was faint and very light(possibly vapor) but we are not sure...any thoughts????

We were only out for 45 minutes with no apparent problems through any range of throttle. Planning another sea trial this weekend for approximatley 4 hours. Will be monitering engine space tempertature, carbon monoxide and speed again. Will also be checking oil afterwards for any abnormalities. Is there anything else we should be looking for????

I would be interested in speeds in still water. Any guess to how fast the current was?

Question: On a gas engine one can pull the spark plug wire on a running engine to see if that cylinder is missing. Can one do the same thing on a diesel by flipping the compression release the cylinder?

Consider to add 're-torquing the cylinder heads' every few years to your 'maintenance schedule'.

One at a time .... Remove the bolts, lubricate the threads (consult engine mfg. for their spec. recommendation of lubricant), and re-torque each 'several times'. Fairly easy job.

No, you can damage the engine if the compression release is opened while the engine is running. You can check to make sure all cylinders are firing with a thermometer. The IR type units are now under $50. Take the temperature of the exhaust pipe for each cylinder, at the head, and at various other locations. If a cylinder is not running, or not firing properly, the temperature will be less.

Congratulations

There was no doubt that you guys could do it, and good on ya. Suggestions, watch the temp., watch for any water in the oil, re torque the head bolts after running for a while, and go out and enjoy.

On the way out (with current speed was up to 6.9 at 100%) on the way back (against current was 5 - 5.1 at 80 %) I am hoping still will give me 6.2 at 80 %. Will let you know. It is far better than 4.8 at 80 % with the current.

As far as the spark plug. You can loosen the fuel line at the injector when it is running to see if the engine performance drops. Last year when loosening the #2 it did not change the engine rpm. Now loosening either results in a drop in rpm (as it should)

Have considered re torquing in 50 hrs as per yanmar suggestion then check every 300 -500 hrs.


Can anyone tell me what the temp at the exhaust should be or where to find that information?
