I installed a Groco K head in the fall of 2004. Recently after the head is flushed, the handle slowly moves forward and about 1/2 gallon of water slowly flows back into the bowl; when I flush again, the process repeats. Sometimes it can take several hours for the backflow to appear. I notice a slight hissing sound from the valve at the bottom of the bowel. Is this a sign that the joker valve needs replacing, or is it likely to be something else? Thanks, David

Check your tank vent...
Backflow, especially with backpressure is an indication of a block tank vent that's pressurized the tank. That hissing sound you're hearing is most likely that pressure escaping via the toilet because it can't get out the vent. The two most likely places for a tank vent blockage are the thru-hull and the connection at the tank...both the tank fitting and that end of the hose.

Hissing Sound
Sure sounds like a plugged-up holding tank vent to me! Your tank is pressurizing because the air inside the tank can't get out as the tank fills. Then that pressure takes the path of least resistance - through the joker (duckbill) valve and back into the toilet. That's the hissing sound that you're hearing.
