Dave,
Our daughter, starting sailing at 5 months old and love to sleep in V berth a great deal. I use a plexiglass section that I could slide in and out easily. It was clear so she could see us and vise versa. We made shorter than the height of opening so we could hear her and when she got older she could not climb out either. We also use to take our "settee" cushion on put them on either side to the V berth under sail, so she would not be thrown about. IT was hilarious to see her develop sailing habits, we would often find her completely spread out (star position) and sound asleep, never rolled around!!!
I had also installed 2 anchoring systems for her car seat, one by the table facing the stern, so we could see her (vice-versa) from cockpit and one in the cockpit.
Whenever we carrying out manoeuvres (docking, setting and dowsing sail etc) she was instructed to go in her car seat, it then became automatic for her.
Whenever in the cockpit, she alway wore a lifejacket and harness. Never had nets around the boat, she learned to hold on and act safely when going around.
Now at 14 years old, she is like a ballerina around the boat....and never any arguments about life jacket and/or harness. Good habits die hard!!!
Enjoy!
