311 too slow under power
I've been looking at a 2001 Beneteau 311 for some time. I owned a Columbia 8.7m some years ago in Florida. Now in NC. Should I be aware of any specific issues with the 311? Thanks.
Some have complained about slow speeds under power (see posting 311 Under Power 05.07.2004 ).
I had the same problem; my boat was one knot slower under power than than a test report of the French version. In forward, the engine could rev to 3800--200 rpm more than the intermittent max. And this on an engine with a governor speed control! I concluded that the propeller (14/10) was too small.
.
Repitching the propeller to 14x12 gave me an extra knot--6.6 knots at 3000 rpm in calm water with a clean bottom. This seemed perfect: full power setting gave 3600 rpm with smoke, reducing to 3400 rpm eliminated the smoke. (Yanmar rates the 2GM at 3400 rpm max continuous 3600 rpm max intermittent.)
Caution: The Yanmar 2GM reverse/reduction gear is available with several reduction ratios. Results could vary.
